UPMC Imaging Services is pleased to recruit for the newly created position of MRI Clinical Research Technologist.  This position will provide a superior level of care to clinical patients approximately 50% of the time, with the remaining 50% of effort engaged in imaging research scans within the MR Research Center.  This multi-skilled position will allow individuals to provide clinical patient care while also participating in cutting-edge research. 

The MRI Clinical/Research Technologist, Advanced shall have shared work effort in both clinical MR and research MR and shall perform MR procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision under general direction of the supervisor. Perform a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the operation of MR equipment necessary for securing imaging of various portions of the body for use in the diagnosis of disease or injury. No travel but the role will have responsibilities in both clinical MR at UPMC Presbyterian and research MR within the MR Research Center, also located in UPMC Presbyterian.  Full-time daylight shifts with one evening/night rotation every 90 days and weekend coverage if needed by team.


  • CLINICAL / RESEARCH ROTATION. Shall maintain approximately a 50/50 work effort in both clinical MR and research MR and will be required to work a minimum of 1 clinical shift per week. Shall also participate in a one-week evening/night rotation in clinical MR every 90 days.
  • COMMUNICATION. Establish and maintain an atmosphere of caring and support for patients, visitors, medical staff and co-workers. Manage difficult or emotional customer situations and respond promptly to customer needs. Communicate effectively and concisely with all members of the healthcare team, verbally and in writing. Exhibit good listening skills.
  • PATIENT INTERACTION AND RECORDKEEPING. Receive patients and verify identification and written orders for requested and approved procedures. Explain procedures and answer patients' questions and concerns before performing the procedure. Position patients, choose appropriate factors and follow established protocols required to produce high quality MR scans. Complete requisition and charge vouchers according to department procedures.
  • PERFORM MR EXAMS. Film MR exams as described in the protocol guidelines. Adjust to fluctuations in workload. Maintain working knowledge of all scan equipment e.g. coils, upgrade, etc. Perform non-technical duties as required. Perform image post processing, networking and archiving as needed. Perform patient assessments as needed. Perform venipuncture and administer MR contrast as ordered by the radiologists. Maintain working knowledge of scanning equipment and perform minor calibrations on the equipment and/or report the need for major services or repairs to proper personnel. Operate and maintain monitoring equipment.

Patient safety is addressed through marking sides on films, marking side site, and proper identification of patients. Seek increased responsibilities.

  • The MR Clinical/Research Technologist, Advanced must have satisfactorily completed formal training in a radiology related program, i.e. Radiology or Nuclear Medicine with accreditation by the ARRT or NMTCB.
  • A minimum of 2 years of MR experience is required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • ARRT Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
