Lab Animal Research Assistant

Description

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full-time Lab Animal Research Assistant Associate to support the Animal Faculty department!

This position will work Monday through Friday flexible daylight hours with rotating 4-hour shifts on the weekends. . Hours are subject to change based on business needs.

The Lab Animal Research Assistant is responsible for the care and maintenance of Hospital research animals, for the maintenance of research facilities, as an assistant to research investigators, and as an assistant to the Supervisor, Animal Laboratory.

The MWRI lab animal facility strives to provide a safe and enriching environment for our research animals. We take our husbandry and enrichment protocols above and beyond. Our veterinary care is held to the highest standards to ensure our animals are healthy and happy.

Responsibilities:

  • Assemble catheters and sterile surgical packs used in surgery and experiments.
  • Assist investigators and other research personnel with animal surgery and other experiments as requested.
  • Clean and disinfect animal care area and equipment.
  • Prepare animals for surgical research, administers pre-anesthetics, intubate airway, and administers general anesthesia, inserts indwelling catheters using sterile techniques, assist investigators in data collection during experimentation, perform necropsy and removes specific organs and tissues from research animals.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and process specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
  • Responsible for the general care, feeding and cleaning of animals housed in the Hospital's Animal Research facility.
  • Dispose of animal waste, animal carcasses and bio-hazardous waste according to established procedures and universal precautions.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science and/or certification as an Animal Health Technician is preferred.
  • One-year experience in an animal research facility or veterinary hospital or equivalent.
  • Thorough knowledge of all pertinent government and regulatory agencies rules, regulations and guidelines for the care and use of animals in research.
  • Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit.
  • Ability to observe and evaluate animals to determine suitability and determine if they are physically well for scientific research. Provide animal husbandry services and assists in surgery and the performance of experiments.
  • Demonstrated ability to administer IM/IV antibiotic therapy.
  • Competent ability to use diagnostic and surgical equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift and restrain large and heavy animals for surgery and removal from facility.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer equipment and various types of data management software.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • LAT certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science or eligibility for certification preferred.
