Across UPMC, our guiding principle is to always prioritize the safety of our employees, patients, and members. UPMC believes that vaccination is important, helps protect all, and advocates that everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated.

UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Spiritual Care Coordinator


Coordinates and/or provides spiritual counseling and guidance to patients, families, medical staff and employees as well as performs/arranges for religious services to meet the need of the patients. Serves as a liaison to the Community Clergy to ensure they are notified when members of their congregations become patients.



  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Communicate important information to nursing to ensure required documentation on medical charts. Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, affiliations with professional associations, etc. Attend required meeting and participate on committees as directed.
  • Take calls and remain accessible/available for emergencies. Assist with the maintenance of established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control. Maintain required records, reports, statistics, etc.
  • Act as a liaison between patient, family and hospital staff during periods of crisis. e.g. critical illness, dying, lengthy or difficult surgery.
  • Collaborate with members of the hospital care team to identify and resolve problems.
  • Remain available for consultation to hospital staff and other individuals on matters pertaining to hospital ministry.
  • Visit with patients and employees upon request for spiritual counseling.
  • Cooperate with health care team in assisting patient and family to make personal adjustments/decisions.
  • Facilitate activities such as scheduled religious services, chapel functions, arranging for visiting clergy. Administer the sacrament and perform religious rites, e.g. baptism, or arrange for an appropriate religious leader to do so.
  • Evaluate patient needs for spiritual guidance and counseling and initiate or coordinate programs and services to meet those needs.
  • Coordinate pastoral care activities, including maintaining working schedule of in house spiritual volunteers, under the guidance of the Manger, Volunteer Services. Interact with department heads and administration to communicate the problems and needs of the patients and the community clergy.


Bachelor's Degree from an accredited theological seminary preferred or endorsement by a recognized religious body and proper authority. One unit CPE desired. Experience in hospital-based pastoral care ministry preferred. Excellent customer service skills required. Ability to move throughout the entire hospital.
