Description
UPMC Children's Hospital is looking for an intern to join the Pint Size Prescriptions team. Pint Size Prescriptions, the outpatient pharmacy, fills prescriptions for children discharging from the hospital units, ER and visiting on-site clinics. The pharmacy functions as a retail pharmacy within the hospital to ensure our patients have necessary medications before they leave the hospital and continue to provide medications when they are home. Daily tasks include using the register, data entry, dispensing, insurance billing, shipping, bedside delivery, and non-sterile compounding. The pharmacy also handles specialty medication and hazardous drugs within regulatory and policy standards.
*The work is fast paced, and team driven. There is a high level of patient interaction, both in person and over the phone. Candidates will need strong people skills, function well with distractions/interruptions while remaining organized throughout the day.*
The pharmacy is open 9:30 - 7:30 Mondays through Fridays and 10:00 - 2:00 Saturdays and Sundays. The pharmacy is closed major holidays.
Interns work 2 evenings after school and every other weekend. Additional hours available during school breaks.

Responsibilities:
- Assists the pharmacist with medication review, including but not limited to computer order entry, monitoring allergies, enforcing formulary decisions, and evaluating drug interactions.
- Where applicable, completes clinical workload documentation (manual or electronic) by the end of each scheduled shift in accordance with Department procedures.
- Progressively, over 3 years, will assist the Drug Use and Disease State Management Program by reviewing physician prescribing practices, assisting with design of formulary decisions, and evaluating medication error and adverse event experience.
- Accurately completes departmental documentation and billing by the end of each scheduled shift in accordance with department procedures. Examples included, but are not limited to, dispensing and compounding records, refrigerator logs, hood-cleaning records, chemotherapy compounding records, patient/department billing, and controlled substance delivery records.
- Develops and maintains a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
- Assists the pharmacist with medication distribution, including but not limited to filling medication orders, preparing IV admixtures/chemotherapy and controlled substance orders, maintaining patient profiles, performing prepacking, delivering medications, and exchanging emergency medication carts.
- Effectively uses information systems, robotics, and other applications to prepare medication labels, assist with dispensing medications, and prepare drug information responses.
Qualifications
- Good standing in an accredited School of Pharmacy.
- Minimum course equivalency of first professional year of college of Pharmacy.
- Prior experience in pharmacy practice and career track in hospital pharmacy preferred.
- Retail Pharmacy experience preferred
- Must possess good communication and computer skills.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy Intern Certificate Certification preferred.
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
