UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Plan, develop, and direct the operations of the Pharmacy Department consistent with the values, mission, and strategic plan of Children's Hospital to ensure quality, service and financial outcomes. Maintain development and implementation of clinical pharmacy programs and directing the activities of staff engaged in preparation and dispensation of medications. Manage staff and physical resources within the department.



  • Manage departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards, guidelines and quality assurance standards. Ensure that all quality control tests and procedures are performed and documented.
  • Streamline operational processes through continuous improvement to improve efficiency of individual patient case or episode of care, and department operations.
  • Establish a collaborative relationship between physicians, employees, and managers to assure that issues are identified, evaluated, and resolved as a team. Ensure effective communication channels between physicians, employees, and manager.
  • Monitor and control operating cost per case within the department. Make final determinations on all drugs and supplies to be ordered from the Central Pharmacy. Responsible for inventory control, and direct the purchase and storage of drugs ensuring compliance with departmental policies, professional standards and legal/regulatory requirements.
  • Develop an annual operating plan, operating budget, and capital budget, which support the hospital's strategic plan. Approve purchases. Review procedure charges on a regular basis and recommend adjustments as needed. Supervise the processing, billing, and charging of external laboratory tests.
  • Establish, in collaboration with physician department heads and managers, quality and service standards for the department. Develop systems to ensure that standards are maintained, and establish operating plans to address areas that do not meet standards.
  • Develop internal and external customer relationships (medical staff, employees, children and parents, payers). Identify customer needs, develops systems to monitor satisfaction, and develops operating plans to address areas of dissatisfaction.
  • Develop, review, and approve departmental policies. Ensure consistent administration of standards, policies, and procedures. Communicate and enforce hospital policies and procedures.
  • Identify and define customer and market needs within the scope of departmental operations. Evaluate current services and develops business plans and operating objectives to define new services.
  • Monitor distribution of narcotics/controlled substances and maintenance of affiliated records ensuring compliance with federal and state law regulatory agency guidelines.
  • Coordinate departmental activities to enhance integration and efficiency within the hospital system.
  • Interview, hire, and may discharge as necessary departmental personnel. Mentor and evaluate performance for managers and departmental staff. Establish development plans and support continuing education and training needs.



  • Master's degree or a degree in Pharmacology or Business Administration.
  • 10 years of Pharmacy experience required.
  • 5 years in an executive or middle management position.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Pharmacist
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
