Description

UPMC is hiring an Intermediate Software Engineer to contribute towards the modernization as well as operational excellence initiatives of Health Plan's Claims Systems built/maintained by the Core Systems IT Department.
 
Core Systems department provides IT solutions to UPMC Health Plan from Enrollment, Billing, and Claims Processing perspectives. While all these functions currently have been managed in the application called MC400 with RPG/DB2/iSeries/IBMi platform, Core Systems has started a long-term modernization initiative to ultimately transit into Windows/.Net/C#/Angular JS/SQL-No SQL/Cloud platform. We’re looking for Intermediate Software Engineers (IBMi) to continue to build and expand the team to work towards multiyear multiple modernization as well as ongoing operational excellence projects. The expectation is to work with other Software Engineers and Architects on both sides (IBMi and .Net/Cloud), other roles (BA, Scrum Master, PM, QA) within and across the IT departments as well as with Business Stakeholders in agile/DevOps framework.
 
An ideal IBMi software engineer candidate should be a self-starter, have a deep understanding of the technologies outlined in the preferences and be willing/capable to learn/share the industry best practices and address issues across multiple teams/technologies to build future centric business capabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Documentation - Create basic technical documentation. Responsible for maintaining and validating current documentation.
  • Security - Show fundamental knowledge and follow secure coding processes and writing, accessing, and following established security protocols.
  • Quality - Follow established coding standards. Submit code for review and deliver quality, unit test code.
  • Integration - Responsible for components of integration within a module.
  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects.
  • Troubleshooting - Independently resolve issues. Mentor associate-level staff with issue resolution.
  • Design - Follow established design patterns and has awareness of user experience standards. Responsible for individual components of design.
  • Project Management - Has ownership in success of projects. Responsible for estimating and delivering on individual task within project.
  • Software Solutions - Develop, validate and implement software solutions based on customer requirements, Enterprise architecture standards and defined project designs.

Qualifications

  • Typically has 2+ years of related work experience.
  • Experience with complex development environments, taking abstract concepts and ideas and formulating a detailed software deliverable
  • Experience in developing on cross-functional systems
  • Deep knowledge of programming
  • Basic understanding of the SDLC
  • Highly driven and self-motivated to exceed expectations Ability to work independently and in a team-based environment
  • Proficient in both oral and written communication
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to design, optimize and refactor the code for improved performance
  • Experience in IBM i/iSeries development including but not limited to CL, RPG/RPGLE, true ILE components, 100% RPG Free statement formats, Procedures, Modules, Service programs, activation groups, Binding directories, Binder Language, SQL, Embedded SQL, DDL, Data Queues, JDBC, Rational Developer, iNavigator, ACS, Message Queues, REST APIs, JSON, Web services and Database concepts
  • Experience in developing using RDi without the need for SEU
  • Experience with SQL including utilizing embedded SQL in RPGLE programs, DDL structure, Views, Tables and Index structures; working knowledge of relational databases
  • Knowledge of modular programming, SQL cursors, and related processing
  • Working knowledge of Commitment Control, IFS, and FTP/DNS concepts
  • Experience with DB2 including Tables, Views, and Trigger concepts
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following:  IBM IWS, IBM AxisC, MuleSoft, Valance, Klement’s HTTP Lib, open-source frameworks for REST provisioning and/or consuming
  • Exposure of designing and consuming REST APIs
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum and Waterfall development methodology
  • Healthcare domain experience preferred
This is a remote position with workspace available in US Steel Tower (Pittsburgh, PA) if needed
