The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Director, Cardiology

Description

Purpose:
Manage and oversee hospital-based cardiology testing areas including Nuclear Cardiology, Echocardiography, Central Heart Station, Cardiac CT Scan Testing, and Cath Lab. Outpatient and Inpatient diagnostic tests are performed at these sites. Manage operating and capital budgets, organize and direct staff, develop and implement policies, and monitors service quality and productivity. Administer all department policies across the practice sites. Ensure compliance with all state, federal and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Educate and support department Team Leads with understanding, reporting, and resolving issues and trends affecting reimbursement and CDM accuracy (i.e. corporate late charges, unbilled clinic reports, Medicare error reports, departmental standard updates).
  • Project the need for additional staff and coordinate recruitment and selection of staff with Human Resources and departmental Lead Coordinators accordingly.
  • Facilitate customer service satisfaction for patients, physicians, and referring physicians served.
  • Ensure that these clinical areas develop and achieve specific, measurable goals and objectives, which are consistent with UPMC Health System's short and long-range plan.
  • Ensure that there is a current written organizational plan for each department, which outlines functions, structure, and mechanisms for planning and decision-making that accurately reflect the various departmental practices in accordance with JCAHO, UNOS, DOH, State, and Federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with Team Leads in the development of, and oversight for meeting annual capital/operational budget goals.
  • Provide ongoing performance feedback and complete annual performance reviews.
  • Mentor both professional and administrative staff members to compassionately interact with patients, physicians, and fellow coworkers.
  • Evaluate operations of departments through regularly scheduled meeting with Managers (minimum of 12/yr.), review performance and financial reports, ensure accurate submission of MRS/variance reports, and present departmental reports.
  • Educate and support department Team Leads with understanding, monitoring and reporting changes in clinical volume trends.
  • Monitor departmental compliance in meeting departmental targets set for merit increases.
  • Provide staff development opportunities and encouragement to engage in educational and professionally challenging activities.
  • Continuously conduct service line analysis to identify, develop and implement key strategies which are designed to align the organization to better deliver services, respond to patient needs, manage resources, and achieve established qualitative/quantitative performance metrics.
  • Facilitate the exchange of ideas and use of problem-solving techniques among Team Leads during monthly group meetings to maximize team resources.
  • Organize and participate in efforts to strengthen referral bases through community networking, physician relations and outreach programs.
  • Investigate and remedy complaints arising from within the staff, physicians, and/or other departments or health care teams, and resolve intra-departmental co-worker conflicts.
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate the performance of the following departments: Nuclear Cardiology, Echocardiography, Central Heart Station, Cardiovascular Institute's Cardiac CT Program, and Cath Lab.
  • Collaborate with the Medical/Surgical Staff, other disciplines, and both In- and Out-patient Departments of the UPMC Health System for the development of patient care protocols and programs.
  • Provide direction, supervision, and performance evaluation of the department's professional staff.
  • Conduct appropriate corrective action, as defined by UPMC system-wide policy, with professional staff who've demonstrated non-compliance with performance expectations, including but not limited to time and attendance, clinical practice issues, and other procedural or policy violations.
  • Provide effective leadership by establishing collaborative relationships at all internal and external levels for the benefit of this program of patient care.
  • Organize, direct and monitor the daily operations of these departments and staff responsibilities through the appropriate departmentalization and delegation of duties to ensure service excellence quality to patients and physicians.
  • Provide mechanisms for participation by the staff in identifying areas for improvement, planning quality improvement initiatives, developing policies and programs for clinical, educational and research endeavors for their respective departments and collectively as a team.
  • Serve as a role model for staff by displaying kind, compassionate and respectful behavior toward patients and their families as well as respectful and congenial interactions with physicians.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science required or RN with 4 years' experience in Cardiology Services.
  • 5 years in a supervisory imaging or testing role required.
  • Must have experience with research protocols.
  • Computer skills highly desired.
  • Cath Lab experience preferred. 
  • Previous experience as a Manager preferred. 


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • ARRT Certificate OR Certified Cardiology Technician OR Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) OR Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 34
