The Programmer - Senior provides complex programming services, input into defining technical requirements, and develops, maintains, and troubleshoots computer applications/systems to meet client IT and business needs. The Programmer - Senior will be involved with mentoring and leading tasks/initiatives of the team.


  • Maintenance/Support - Handle complex requests to update data and information. Show the ability to program code that others can use. Provide supervision to, mentors, and give feedback to less experienced team members who are providing support. Monitor change requests.
  • Interactions with Others - Successfully completes projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach. Works in collaboration with team and offers feedback, where appropriate, to complete individual and group efforts. Shows the ability to adjust and be flexible to change by adapting approach when necessary. Mentors less experienced staff.
  • Documentation - Create detail-oriented technical documentation. Document new and moderately complex processes. Is responsible for the quality and validity of documentation.
  • Evaluate/Develop/Implement Technical Solutions - Responsible for evaluating, developing, and implementing moderate to complex technical solutions. Responsible for maintaining complex software code. Provide guidance to less experienced members of the team with software maintenance.
  • Project Management - Takes ownership of projects and shows the ability to distribute tasks to the team. Responsible for project milestone completion.
  • Disaster Recovery Plan/Business Continuity - Show the ability to identify business continuity/disaster considerations in team members' programs.
  • Self Development - Responsible for continuous self-study, training, partnering with more senior members of the team, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from senior team members for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.
  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day-to-day work and projects.
  • Deploying production applications/change control processes - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of change control processes. Responsible for performing the changes.
  • Executes the Responsibilities and Duties of Production Services staff - Responds to support, enhancement, project, and miscellaneous requests. Collects and/or documents appropriate information. Works with department leadership, liaisons, and implementations.
  • Participates in Upgrade process including testing and end-user support - Attend onsite training for upgrade. Navigates the upgrade training environment to learn new functionality. Participates in end-user acceptance training. Provides support to end-user.
  • Effectively performs Production Services team - EMDS, Security, System quality, Technology, Decision support, Code management, Hardware, Change management, Issue management, Environment management, Formulary/M.
  • Documentation of work - Documents new design, build, projects, processes, how-tos, etc. in appropriate formats/tools.
  • Consistently meets administrative project expectations - Completes Innotas weekly/ Documents project status bi-weekly. Attends project status meeting. Is prompt and prepared for meetings.
  • Continues to develop knowledge of EpicCare - Actively participates in meetings and opportunities for growth. Actively participates in ongoing training such as tips and tricks sessions, lunch and learn sessions, formal training as offered. 
  • Executes functional and integrated testing of all work to assure quality outcomes are delivered - Creates test plans according to design, build, and workflows of clinic. Executes testing to evaluate build is working as expected.
  • Troubleshoots issues effectively, driving to the root cause and documenting/communicating findings and processes appropriately - Serves effectively as part of the 24x7 on-call rotation.
  • Completes requirements/specs, design, and build for assigned service requests, projects, and enhancements - Meets with appropriate resources at appropriate times. Evaluates current state work flow. Provides future state work flow based upon knowledge.



  • Typically has 5+ years experience in a programming language.
  • Highly driven and self-motivated to exceed expectations.Ability to work independently and in a team-based environment.
  • Effective in mentoring and leading less experienced team members.
  • Proficient in both oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of information technology fundamental tools and concepts of one of the information technology professional disciplines and applies that understanding to make independent practical contributions to IT work within a particular UPMC department or function.
  • Complete ongoing training on-the-job, through courses, self-study, certifications and/or advanced degrees to maintain and enhance technical and business capabilities.
  • Additionally, this position may be required to maintain a stand-by status as part of a rotation within the team. This requires 24 hours per day, 7 days per week availability during the standby period. The frequency varies based upon the number of colleagues in the rotation.

This is a remote position with workspace available in Quantum One Building (Southside, Pittsburgh) if needed
