Statistician HPL- Remote

Description

In this position you will be responsible for comprehensive analysis of data and information to support UPMC Health Plan program evaluation and related outcome analysis. To successfully perform the role, the Statistician must understand and perform statistical analysis as well as investigate the causes of clinical trends and anomalies in data. The incumbent must be able to translate program goals and objectives into testable hypotheses. The incumbent must use their knowledge and understanding of financial, clinical, and other information generated by numerous sources to evaluate programs for clinical and financial efficacy. Furthermore, the position requires the ability to articulate these findings to internal and external audiences in both oral and written format, make recommendations for improvement, and track and monitor progress. These functions must be done while also weighing the practical considerations and potential barriers that must be overcome to successfully implement new programs and processes.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Identifies departmental needs and reports to management as appropriate
  • Implement and monitor effectiveness of these solutions
  • Work with data team to generate and organize constructs necessary for data analysis
  • Monitor program results against appropriate benchmarks
  • Construct business cases and opportunities for improvement based on analyses of data.
  • Identify trends in expenses, utilization, medical quality, and other areas.
  • Maintains policies and procedures of the team / department
  • Design and perform reports and statistical analyses, and then be able to explain this analysis to a non-technical audience of both internal and external customers including senior management and physicians;
  • Meet deadlines and turnaround times set by the department director (these deadlines and turnaround times will, at times, require the employee to work until the project is completed, meaning extended daily work hours, extended work weeks, or both)
  • Investigate variances in data and derive solutions to quality issues
  • Manage routine & special projects which may require oversight of other departments work and coordination of a wide variety of functions
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with internal Health Plan departments, and external contacts as appropriate
  • Perform cost benefit analysis

 

Qualifications

  • A masters' degree in mathematics, statistics or biostatistics, or a related field is required
  • Minimum of three years of experience in statistical analysis.
  • Experience in health care insurance or health care industry preferred, but those with relevant experience in other industries will be considered.
  • Superior computer skills are a given, with knowledge of statistical software packages such as, but not limited to, SAS, Statistica, and STATA.
  • Incumbent must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm, autonomy and initiative on a daily basis.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment is a must.
  • Will need to manage multiple tasks and projects, and forge strong interpersonal relationships within the department, with other departments, and with external audiences. Attention to detail is critical to the success of this position, with demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity.
  • Excellent project management, planning, communication, documentation, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities are required.
  • Advanced mathematical skills including statistics required.
  • Ability to interpret and summarize results of various analyses in a timely and meaningful way. Ability to effectively approach problem-solving.
  • Ability to re-engineer processes to positively impact productivity in terms of timeliness and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Experience preparing results for publication in peer-reviewed journals preferred.
