UPMC Somerset is hiring a Full-Time Registered Nurse (Union) to support the Same Day Services Department in Somerset, PA!
The schedule for this position includes primarily daylight shifts with rotating start times to cover the operational hours of the department, Monday through Friday. This position will also take rotating on-call time to cover evenings and weekends. This position will float to the GI Lab and PACU.

Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Director, Coordinator or Manager the Registered Nurse plans, assesses, implements and evaluates nursing care of patients in the assigned area. The Registered Nurse is expected to have leadership skills to supervise other personnel. The Registered Nurse performs and delegates patient care and non-patient care activities as required for the daily operation of the department
Responsibilities
- Exhibits qualities of professionalism appropriate to the Registered Nurse.
- Assesses patient problems and prioritizes needs. This includes critical thinking that permits differentiation.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise patient care as indicated by the patient's needs to either correct the condition or to reduce potential risk to the patient or writ operation.
- Documents in writing and communicates information about the patient status to co-workers, physicians and ancillary services personnel.
- Reads and interprets policies, procedures and standards of care to effectively plan and provide patient care.
- Maintains competence in performance of routine and specialized nursing procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to education appropriate to the age of the patient served.
- Participates in formal and informal staff development activities, both on and off the nursing unit.
- Identifies strategies to improve flow of work and cost of providing care.
- Maintains a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that promotes positive customer relations.
- Able to independently transfer a patient from the positions of supine, sitting, and standing in any combination.
- Competent at independent performance of technical skills and uses equipment safely (without causing risk or harm), efficiently (using the fewest possible resources), and effectively (achieving the desired or expected outcome).
- Non-essential Functions: 1. Participates in development of policies, procedures, standards of care and quality improvement activities. 2. Develops and presents educational sessions to class. 3. Participates in orientation of new personnel. 4. Participates in quality work groups and committees.
- Supervision: 1. The incumbent is supervised by the Director or Manager. 2. The incumbent has no direct reports.
Qualifications
Required for all positions:
- Licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
- Graduate nurses must take the State Board Nursing Examination within 60 days of hire
- BCLS (upon hire or within 6mo)
- BSN preferred
- Professional Cert preferred
- Act 34, 33 & 73
In addition to the above the following are unit specific:
Telemetry: Certs required (upon hire or within 6 mo) are Basic Cardiac Dysrhythmia & ACLS. NIHSS upon hire.
ICU: Certs required (upon hire or within 6mo) are ACLS, Basic Critical Care Nursing Course, & Basic Dysrhythmia Interpretation Course. NIHSS upon hire.
ED: Certs required (upon hire or within 6mo) are ACLS & PALS. Basic Cardiac Dysrhythmia Interpretation Course (upon hire or within 1yr). NIHSS upon hire.
PACU: 1yr critical care nursing experience. ACLS upon hire. PALS (upon hire or within 6mo). Basic Cardiac Dysrhythmia Interpretation course.
Cardiac Cath Lab: ACLS upon hire. 1yr interventional Cath Lab experience or 1yr critical care nursing experience.
Hospice (OP/IP): 1-2yr general medical/surgical experience. Valid PA driver's license. Evidence of motor vehicle registration and insurance.
Home Health: 1-2yr general medical/surgical experience. Valid PA driver's license. Evidence of motor vehicle registration & insurance.
Home Health–Behavioral: 1yr inpatient behavioral health nursing experience. Behavioral Health Nurse by the American Nurse Credentialing Center.
SDS/Pretesting/GI Lab: 1yr general medical/surgical nursing experience. ACLS upon hire. Certs required (upon hire or within 6mo) are PALS & Basic Cardiac Dysrhythmia Course.
OR: Certs required (upon hire or within 6 months) ACLS & Basic Cardiac Dysrhythmia Interpretation.
Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehab: 5yr experience as a RN. BCLS upon hire. ACLS upon hire.
Coumadin Clinic: 1 year general medical/surgical nursing experience. Completion of Southern Indiana University Anticoagulation Therapy Certification course within 3mo of hire.
PEDS: PALS (upon hire or within 6mo).
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- 1 year general medical/surgical nursing experience.
- 1 year critical care nursing experience
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (upon hire)
- Basic Arrhythmia Course
- Basic Life Support (BLS) (upon hire or within 6 months)
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) (upon hire or within 6 months)
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
- *Applicable required unit specific licensure, certification, and clearances
