Paralegal, Intermediate


Job Summary

This Paralegal-role requires independently applying knowledge of the legal system and substantive and procedural law in providing work of a legal and administrative nature under the supervision of the attorneys of the UPMC Corporate Legal Department. This work requires knowledge of legal concepts, federal, state and local laws and the ability to research moderately complex legal matters and make corporate filings, as well as handle administrative and clerical work. The Paralegal provides legal assistance and enables the UPMC attorneys to deliver legal services more efficiently and economically. This position will support the legal team of the Enterprises Division of UPMC and will be based at the Bakery Square location. In office and work from home time allocation TBD.


Career Ladder





Assist the attorneys within the Corporate Legal Department, and in particular the Enterprises Division, for necessary and appropriate tasks, including legal research.

Provide transactional support for the Enterprises Division legal team in connection with its investments in, and commercial arrangements with, translational science and digital sciences companies.

Perform moderately complex legal research for UPMC attorneys utilizing both local and electronic research tools.

Assist with legal research and analysis.

Obtain legal documents and information from governmental agencies as required on behalf of UPMC divisions and entities.

Complete moderately complex legal filings.

Perform administrative and complex clerical work and handle details of a sensitive and confidential nature.

Develop and maintain a general understanding of internal processes and procedures.

Complete special projects as assigned.

Relieve attorneys of administrative functions in order to increase attorney efficiency and time devoted to corporate counsel responsibilities.

Manage active calendars by organizing, coordinating and making arrangements for meetings and conference calls and ensuring no scheduling conflicts.

Exercise considerable judgment, initiative and discretion in answering verbal and written communications with internal and external contacts and providing information within established guidelines.

Handle travel arrangements and seminar/conference registrations and manage a variety of administrative processes (requisitions, expense reports, time sheets, contact database management).

Process letters, report, memos and other correspondence of a complex, confidential or sensitive nature. Routinely compose correspondence requiring knowledge of UPMC policies, procedures and understanding of legal requirements.

Prepare and assemble materials/documents for meetings.

Handle information requests from UPMC entities.

Complete special projects as assigned.

Assist other paralegals and assistants as necessary.

Educational and Knowledge Requirements

  • High School and 5 years of experience as a legal assistant
  •  OR Paralegal certification and 3 years of experience as a legal assistant
  • OR Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience as a legal assistant.
  • Must have the ability to problem solve and make decisions independently within agreed parameters of attorney supervision and consistent with professional rules of responsibility for the attorney practice of law.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Computer operating mandatory with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Access, Westlaw, Adobe, Pacer, and internet applications. Requisite typing skills of 60 to 70 wpm with a strong command of the English language and excellent proofreading skills.
