Description

Purpose:
The Clinical Nurse Specialist is an essential member of the UPMC Pinnacle health care team who is responsible for supporting and enhancing the delivery of quality nursing care. The Clinical Nurse Specialist is a self-directed, motivated, and empowered clinical expert that utilizes the nursing process to diagnose and treat illness and promote health within defined specialty populations. The Clinical Nurse Specialist utilizes evidence-based nursing care standards and programs of care designed to achieve quality cost-effective patient-focused outcomes across the three spheres of influence.  Cardiac ICU including Open Heart Surgery experience required.  

Responsibilities:

 

  • Able to communicate with patients, all levels of hospital personnel, and physicians. Must use tact and diplomacy and display understanding of adult behavior. Must be optimistic and enthusiastic, and present a positive and professional image of the hospital. Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information. Demonstrates visionary and creative thinking ability.
  • Completes unit-based education requirements and annual mandatory education.
  • Implements any other projects as may be assigned by the Director, Nursing Practice & Research, and the Vice President, Nursing Operations & The Learning Institute or other nursing leadership team members.

  • Organization/System Sphere? Disseminates outcomes of system-wide changes, impact of nursing practices, and CNS work.
  • Nurses/Nursing Practice Sphere? Gathers and analyzes data to substantiate desirable and undesirable patient outcomes.? Anchors nursing practice to evidence-based information to achieve nursing sensitive outcomes. Participates in unit-based Nursing Performance Improvement activities.? Identifies desired outcomes of continuing or changing nursing practice through evidence-based practice. Write proposals and apply for funds to conduct research as appropriate
  • Patient/Client Sphere? Incorporates evidence-based research into nursing interventions within a specialty population.? Designs and conducts nursing research projects and assists staff nurses, clinical managers, staff development instructors, and nurse managers with data collection and analytical techniques.
  • Organization/System Sphere? Serves as a consultant to PinnacleHealth System and the community.? Serves as a consultant in the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of multidisciplinary, departmental, and other projects as needed.? Participates on unit-based and system-wide councils (example, Research).? Participates on committees and task forces as requested.
  • Nurses/Nursing Practice Sphere? Collaborates with nursing personnel and other health care providers to identify needed changes in equipment or products based upon evidence, clinical outcomes, and cost-effectiveness. (Approves and/or recommends purchase of texts, pamphlets, and audio-visual materials).? Works collaboratively with nursing personnel and other members of the health care team to implement innovative interventions that are effective and appropriate to the complexity of the patient and will improve outcomes.? Contributes to unit-based governance models and the system-wide nursing councils as an officer, member, or consultant.? Serves as a consultant to nursing units and other Clinical Nurse Specialists.
  • Patient/Client Sphere? Collaborates to develop unit-based or population-based nursing practice.? Ensures population standards are consistent across continuum.? Functions as a resource to the patient, family, and members of the health care team.
  • Organization/System Sphere? Coordinates education programs for other personnel in the PinnacleHealth System, community agencies, and the general public as needed.? Serves as a liaison between the affiliating Schools of Nursing and the nursing staffs to promote positive learning experiences and working relationships as directed.? Precepts or acts as adjunct faculty to graduate students as needed.? May present poster and/or podium presentations at local, state, or national conferences.? May contribute to professional nursing literature.
  • Nurses/Nursing Practice Sphere? Identifies educational needs for individual nursing units.? Develops and implements educational programs based upon individual unit needs.? Mentors nurses to critique and apply research evidence to nursing practice.? Mentors nurses to acquire new skills and develop careers in an environment that stimulates self-learning.? Evaluates and modifies educational programs to meet the needs of the individual units.
  • Patient/Client Sphere? Develops educational material for patients and families.? Supports the interdisciplinary Patient Education Committee, Learning Institute, and unit-based patient education as needed.? May present at community education programs.
  • Organization/System Sphere? Implements interventions that integrate the unique needs of individuals, families, groups, or communities.? If applicable: Identifies national goals to establish clinical practice and measure progress within the Neurology service line.
  • Nurses/Nursing Practice Sphere? Collaborates with the nurse in discharge planning; includes referrals to social or health care agencies, consultations with physicians, and patient education as needed.? Informs nursing staff and physicians of special needs of the patient and family in relation to current care and/or discharge planning.? Collaborates to develop unit-based nursing practice and patient outcome standards.
  • Patient/Client Sphere? Provides indirect or direct nursing interventions to care for patients of all ages with complex needs.? Conducts comprehensive, holistic assessments utilizing known or innovative evidence-based techniques, tools, methods.? Obtains data (disease, etiologies, culture, and age-related factors) to formulate differential diagnoses.? Develops differential diagnoses of illness problems.? Plans for systematic investigation of patient problems needing clinical inquiry.

 

Qualifications

Current active Pennsylvania RN license. Master?s Degree in Nursing, CNS track and licensed to practice as a CNS in Pennsylvania (effective for new hires in 2010). A minimum of two years clinical experience in area of specialty is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Preferred Qualifications:Certification in area of specialty is preferred. Experience in program development and adult education is desirable. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
