Central Sterile Processing Technician (Multiple Levels) - Surgical Processing

UPMC Shadyside is hiring a full-time Central Sterile Processing Technician to join our growing Surgical Processing team! Additionally, we are currently offering a generous sign-on bonus for all full-time and part-time Central Sterile Processing positions! ( 2+ years of central sterile experience is required for bonus.)

Sign-On Bonus Details:

  • Full-time - $5,000 sign-on with 2 year work commitment
  • Part-time - $2,500 sign-on with 2 year work commitment

You will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the career ladder, based on your individual experience and education.



  • Prepare and assemble surgical tray and equipment following established tray listings for issue, storage, or further processing.
  • Conform and adhere to department policies concerning decontamination, sterile processing, infection control, and safety.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of, and effectively troubleshoot, all decontamination/sterilization equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of performance improvement tools and techniques. Continuously improve the quality of care and the work environment of outcomes and the integration of research and best practices into daily work.
  • Share learning from improvements with other units and/or spreads across the business unit or system.
  • Assess supplies required for prescribed standard surgical procedures and set up case carts.
  • Maintain inventory, collect, disassemble, inspect, clean, disinfect, and reassemble all instrument trays patient care equipment.
  • Display awareness of cost containment in the organization of work by using economy in time, motion, and material.


  • High school graduate or equivalent required. 
  • Six months of healthcare experience or currently enrolled in an Accredited Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Program, preferred.
  • Must complete 10 hours of continuing education to remain qualified as a Central Sterile Technician on an annual basis.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances 

  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Certified Registered Central Service Technician or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management certification required. 
  • New employees will have 18 months from the date of hire to obtain the required certification
  • Employees active in a Central Sterile position, on or before the effective date, at a healthcare facility, are grandfathered regarding the certification and will not need to obtain it unless they move into a different position that would require certification.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
