Job Summary

The Advanced Educator is a highly developed role model of nursing education who has the authority, responsibility and accountability for the multiple campus coordination of faculty and curriculum across the Schools of Nursing at UPMC as well as the management and participation of classroom and clinical instruction of students, when needed.  The advanced educator is a nursing leader with educational responsibilities within the school and leadership and educational responsibilities across all school of nursing campuses.  The advanced nurse educator assists the director with faculty development, measurement and evaluation as well as providing leadership for school activities. This role partners with management in the achievement of a culture of excellence in the educational environment.



Creates a learning environment that focuses on student socialization to the role of the nurse and facilitates learner's self-reflection. Assists faculty in developing the ability to engage in thoughtful and constructive self and peer evaluation. Implements curriculum revisions based on sound educational principles, nursing theory and evidenced based research across the campuses. Observes, evaluates and provides feedback regarding faculty performance in the classroom and clinical practice area. Initiates the performance evaluation process for assigned faculty and submit to director. Coordinates a nursing course, including course outlines and syllabi, evaluation methodologies and across all schools of nursing. Creates appropriate resources for the diverse student learner and assists faculty in developing relevant resources. Ensures that available resources are utilized efficiently and equitably across all schools of nursing. Participates in the classroom and clinical instruction of students, as needed. Establishes and maintains positive, caring relationships with management, faculty, and students as well as patients/families and all other members of the health care team.

Disseminates best practice in nursing through contributions to UPMC newsletters, presentations at annual best practice conference or at regional conferences. Exhibits a spirit of inquiry about teaching-learning, student development, evaluation methodology or other aspects of the role of the educator by completing an annual scholarly project promoting innovative best practices in nursing education. Aggregates data to reflect the outcomes of the teaching learning process within the school and across all campuses. Analyzes student, faculty, and employer satisfaction outcome data in co-creating a strategic action plan that continuously improves the educational process. Facilitates multi-campus processes, committees and quality initiatives to assure appropriate credentialing.

Incorporates the goals of the nursing program and the parent institution when proposing change or managing ideas. Develops networks, collaborations and partnership to enhance nursing's influence within the organization and the community. Integrates the values of trust, respect, collegiality, professionalism and caring to build an organizational climate that fosters development of the student and the teacher. Develops and maintains productive working relationships within each individual school and across the schools by building teams through the use of positive communication and motivational techniques. Resolves and manages conflict effectively and in a timely manner. Coaches faculty and students on cultural diversity and civility in the educational environment. Creates an environment which recognizes and values differences in students, peers, patients, families and communities.

Serves as a change agent in the parent institution as well as across the Schools of Nursing in enhancing the visibility of nursing. Evaluates teaching-learning effectiveness and create strategies for change in nursing education. Identifies, educates and supports the learning needs of faculty during change process. Assumes formal leadership responsibilities for one or more of the following cross campus committees:  Quality Improvement, MELT (measurement & evaluation leadership team), Faculty Senate and/or Faculty Development and Research. Demonstrates a high level of initiative and ability to work independently in an active leadership role within UPMC Schools of Nursing and individual campuses. Serves as chair for an assigned nursing course. Chairs one of the major committees in the school of nursing:  Curriculum, Faculty Development, Systematic Program Evaluation, Recruitment & Retention and Student Support Services.

Assumes an active leadership role in a professional nursing organization. Demonstrates commitment in the development of faculty through mentoring, education and knowledge sharing. Acts as a role model for continuous learning through formal and informal education. Mentors and develops new faculty during the orientation process. Collaborates with faculty to identify budgetary needs and provide input to Director, Executive Director and Associate Executive Director, Business Operations.

Demonstrates sound decision making in addition to critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of the teaching-learning process and evaluation of faculty and student performance. Works productively and effectively within a complex educational environment, supervising faculty, handling multiple students and creating meaningful learning opportunities.

Educational and Knowledge Requirements

MSN required, 5 years of clinical nursing practice, 5 years of clinical and course teaching experience Active enrollment in PhD or DNP program. UPMC approved certification from an accredited certification body and must be education-focused or education-related


Licenses and Certifications Notes

Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. UPMC approved certification required in lieu of PhD or DNP enrollment. PR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. Have Act 33, 34 and 73 (FBI) clearances. Appointment to this position and retention of this position is contingent upon the approval of the PA State Board of Nursing.
