The Senior Manager of Logistics & Distribution Operations is responsible for establishing the infrastructure for the Consolidated Service Center and delivery operations in an effort to most effectively and timely fulfill the needs of our care teams across the system. This includes our 42 hospitals, 20 senior living centers, cancer centers and more than 1200 non-acute sites.  In this role, the incumbent's scope is the hiring, training, career counseling and discipline of up to 80 teammates, including temporary during peak activity. This is a full-time position primarily works during daylight hours with overnight hours as needed. Work from home may be available based on business operations. 


  • In conjunction with the VP, Materials Management, establish direction across the network to achieve year over year service and cost improvement performance. Drive annual productivity and cost savings against the Networks distribution budget spend of greater than $ 4.5 million and the throughput of $300 million in medical/surgical goods.
  • Assesses organizational and operational effectiveness and recommends changes/enhancements that will improve operating processes and performance. Coordinates supply chain volunteers for major moves of product from primary distribution facility to ancillary distribution facility.
  • Serves as key player in the emergent distribution of medical/surgical products during a man-made or natural disaster. Best deploys UPMC assets from underutilized facilities to a place where these can be further leveraged.
  • Coordinates with vendors, sourcing and materials managers for the change-over of major categories of products. Coordinates with vendors, customs and sourcing on the non-traditional delivery of spot-buy items when main products are on worldwide shortage. This requires off-hours delivery and unload of sea shipping containers which is a very manual process.
  • Coordinates and manages the substantial delivery of personal protective equipment to fulfill an emergency grant for entities outside of UPMC with State of PA resources and project resources within UPMC and our competitors. Works with outside vendors to secure the best pricing for services regarding building and equipment maintenance.
  • Lead the distribution process for the new 3D manufacturing (inbound and outbound) of swabs and other items, while collaborating with labs, VPs and other key stake holders. Coordinate the safe handling procedures for distribution of product from specialty pharmacies (Chartwell) that require carefully controlled temperatures.
  • Help identify best distribution channel to provide lowest cost and best service for areas outside of Western Pennsylvania. Identify the best-cost/best-service freight partners in order to drive significant savings without a degradation of service.
  • Act as liaison to customers, sourcing, and procurement operations. Oversee and participate in integration activity implementing the most appropriate supply chain management practices.
  • Monitor industry changes, explore new technologies as they are available, and implement solutions. Monitor customer satisfaction and employ feedback when considering operational changes.
  • Responsible for the development, monitoring, and benchmarking of key supply chain performance indicators, and using these indicators in operational decisions. Provide monthly activity and benchmarking reports as required. Assist in the development and monitoring of operating and capital budgets.
  • Assist materials management with other projects such as courier service optimization, fleet management, mail distribution, etc. Responsibilities may include more than one facility.



  • A minimum of eight years experience and a Bachelor's degree required; OR 12 years in a distribution environment including responsibilities such as staff management, interpreting and acting on performance and service data, forecasting, implementation of ERP's and materials management solutions, and working as a member of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and follow-up skills required.
  • Demonstrated competence in warehousing, distribution, transportation, and supply chain processes, distribution network strategy and design, data analysis, demand planning, and budgeting is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of PeopleSoft or similar ERP, Excel, and Word applications mandatory.
  • Strong communicative, decision-making and interpersonal skills are necessary.
