Purpose:
The Hospital Architect works under the general direction of the Manager, Healthcare Facilities Planning to carry out large design and master planning projects for multiple UPMC hospital campuses. This position requires a high level of understanding of the design and construction process and regulatory documentation. This individual must interact with the hospital department heads and senior leadership to manage projects within the established timeline and budgets. The Hospital Architect is also a mentor to the Facilities Planners and Cad Drafters as they develop in their roles.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a working knowledge of the existing facilities and their utilization for hospitals and other campus buildings.
  • Develops and monitors the conceptual project budgets. Communicates monthly budget status to senior management and the Program Director, Planning. Contributes to the Capital Construction Budget by providing conceptual project estimates.
  • Establishes written project timelines and communicates them to the administrative sponsor of the project and the Director, Planning and Design.
  • Maintains an on-going knowledge of external regulations and the impact on the construction process.
  • Reviews construction documents prepared by the A+E firms for accuracy, constructability and value engineering ideas.
  • Oversees the bidding and/or negotiation phase of the design services for each project to obtain the best prices for the work.
  • Coaches and mentors staff. Provides leadership to the planning and design professionals. Explains planning and design processes and construction management techniques.
  • Oversees all aspects of the Hospital Master Planning, including, design, planning, estimating, scheduling, and management services.
  • Coordinates planning and design personnel, outside vendors, contractors and design professionals to assure comprehensive satisfaction of the end user for all projects assigned.
  • Manages large Master Planning projects, coordinating the resources of the external A/E firm, consultants for the project, internal project engineers, interior designer, equipment planner and other resources as necessary.
  • Responsible for oversight of regulatory documentation.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Planning or related field required.
  • Minimum 10 years of Design/Planning experience with 5+ years Planning experience in Healthcare-Related Facilities.
  • Solid knowledge of hospital programming, planning, and trends in providing care in the Hospital Environment of Care.
  • Ability to develop and monitor budgets for large projects.
  • Excellent collaboration, communication and teamwork projects.
  • Ability to function independently on assigned projects and effectively coordinate and provide leadership to assigned team members.
  • Must have a planning and design portfolio that contains experience with construction projects worth $5 million or greater.
  • Comprehensive understanding of rules and regulations for Hospital design requirements including (The Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, and local/state building codes.)
  • Proficient user of AutoCAD 2013 with the ability to create and maintain drawing standards of graphics, annotation, and drafting protocols.
  • Presentation skills including graphics software and Microsoft Office and PowerPoint proficiency

ACHA Certification (American College of Healthcare Architects) Preferred
