Across UPMC, our guiding principle is to always prioritize the safety of our employees, patients, and members. UPMC believes that vaccination is important, helps protect all, and advocates that everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated.

UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

About the Program
The UPMC Intern – Internal Communications Summer Internship is paid ($12-14/hour) and will last around 10-12 weeks. In Internal Communications, the team is responsible for communicating to the 92,000+ employees who comprise UPMC. That means that the communication professionals need to understand sometimes complicated issues and processes/procedures and then communicate them in a way that is understandable, interesting, and actionable. This requires a deep understanding of how to influence behaviors as well as how to work closely with leaders and decisionmakers in the organization. As the official voice of UPMC, the Public Relations team (Internal Communications and Media Relations) prides itself on excellence.

This position can be based out of the US Steel Tower. There could be potential to work from home at times.

Areas of focus in the UPMC Internal Communications includes:
• News Development — Creating news strategies to reach diverse audiences across the organization to promote important news and information to help staff do their jobs and stay connected to the business strategy. Responsibilities may include project management; research and content development for internal channels such as digital, social, and print platforms; web and intranet writing; conducting interviews and writing feature stories; and coordinating photo or video shoots.
• Employee Engagement — Investigate, create, and promote recognition and staff profiles that help drive employee engagement. Responsibilities may include creating an internal marketing campaign for a new employee benefit or other initiative aimed at supporting staff, or highlighting events at a hospital that focus on staff contributions.
• Crisis Communications — The Internal Communications team works alongside operational leaders and the Media Relations team to prepare for operational crises impacting UPMC, in order to effectively respond and keep staff informed during a disruption.
• Clinical Excellence — The Internal Communications team works to highlight pioneering UPMC clinicians and innovative treatments through internal channels.
• Collaboration — The team works closely with other departments, like Media Relations and Marketing, to develop and share content, news, and information. We also work closely with hospital leadership and business leaders to develop new communications plans for internal audiences.

During your internship program, you will have the opportunity to network with UPMC Executives, receive mentorship, enhance your skills with hands-on real-world experience and training, and most importantly, work on projects that make an impact on patient care while gaining knowledge on how we provide Life Changing Medicine. • Current Junior or Senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree with a target graduation date between December 2022 and Spring 2024 required
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher required
• Availability to participate as a Summer Intern full-time from June to August 2022 for approximately 10-12 weeks with minimal absence (Yes, don’t worry, you can still enjoy some summer vacation time!)
•Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, health sciences, or a related field is preferred
