As the Business Analyst, Senior, you will perform comprehensive analysis of data and information for various UPMC data sources. Take leadership role in enhancement, development, documentation, and communication of identified areas for improvement.   • Perform complex, detailed statistical, cost, and clinical / financial analyses, and then explain this analysis to a non-technical audience of both internal and external customers and, at times, senior management.

  • Develop varied clinical / financial reports and/or graphs of clinical / financial patient data for the purpose of quality, trending, and results analysis.

  • Investigate variances and derive solutions to variant outcomes results and quality issues.

  • Monitor UPMC Hospital operating performance against regional, national & international benchmarks.

  • Analyze complex clinical / financial data and extract and define relevant information; interpret data for the purpose of determining past clinical / financial performance, and/or to project a future activity.

  • Implement and monitor effectiveness of these solutions.

  • Manage special projects.

  • Interpret clinical / financial data and events for Senior Management who must make clinical quality or business decisions.

  • Periodically perform cost/benefit analysis.

  • Recommend budget changes to clinical operating procedures based upon statistical findings, and advise Senior Management of observed trends or statistical evidence observed in this clinical / financial data.

  • Act as a mentor for less senior Business Analysts and administrative staff.

  • Plan and conduct complex data retrieval techniques and analytical studies to determine trends, profitability, statistical relevance, or costs of business or clinical / financial activities.

  • Identify trends in patient outcomes, utilization, medical quality, and other areas.

  • Meet deadlines and turnaround times set by managers and department director (these deadlines and turnaround times will, at times, require the employee to work until the project is completed, meaning extended daily work hours, extended work weeks, or both).


  • Bachelor's degree in business, mathematics, statistics, health care, management or a related field required.
  • Finance or Accounting degree Preferred.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 5 years experience in financial and/or medical analysis. Or Successful Completion of the FMR Program.
  • Experience in health care industry preferred, but those with relevant experience in other industries will be considered.
  • Superior computer skills are a given, with expert knowledge in Access, Excel, and other financial & statistical software packages.
  • Familiarity to Medipac, Data Warehousing and COGNOS experience would be particularly advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Meditech, Dimensional Insights & CRISP experience strongly preferred.
  • Person must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm and initiative on a daily basis.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment a must.
  • Will need to manage multiple tasks and projects, and forge strong interpersonal relationships within the department, with other departments, and with external audiences.
  • Attention to detail is critical to the success of this position, with demonstrated competency in customer orientation and the ability to deal with ambiguity.Excellent planning, communication, documentation, organizational, analytical, and problem solving abilities.
  • Advanced mathematical skills.
  • Ability to interpret and summarize results of various analyses in a timely and meaningful way.
  • Ability to effectively approach problem solving.
  • Ability to re-engineer processes to positively impact productivity in terms of timeliness and accuracy.
  • Ability to analyze financial & clinical results and to comprehend forecasting models.
  • Well-informed and conversant with general business, economic, and clinical matters.
