Research Specialist | Sleep and Behavioral Neuroscience Center

Description

UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is hiring a Research Specialist to support a research program that focuses on understanding how sleep and circadian rhythms relate to mood and substance use problems in teens and young adults. This NIH-funded research employs diverse methodologies including ecological momentary assessment (EMA), laboratory-based sleep and circadian measures (e.g., salivary melatonin), and functional neuroimaging.


The Research Specialist will be responsible for supervising participants during visits to the Sleep and Behavioral Neuroscience Center, including administering self-report and computer task-based assessments, as well as collecting samples (e.g., saliva samples to measure melatonin levels). The role will also be assisting in scheduling participants at the Sleep and Behavioral Neuroscience Center, escorting participants to the Magnetic Resonance Research Center for their fMRI scan and assisting with getting them set up for the scan, instructing participants on the use of Actiwatches (similar to Fitbits) and downloading and processing of the Actiwatch data.

This position is grant funded.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently execute job functions for research protocol(s) including recruitment, scheduling appointments, obtaining written consent forms, collecting data by conducting phone or face to face interviews for research project(s).
  • Collaborate with senior research personnel regarding recruitment, data collection, outcomes of interviews, reports according to the needs of the study.
  • Supervising participants during visits to the Sleep and Behavioral Neuroscience Center, including administering self-report and computer task-based assessments, as well as collecting samples (e.g., saliva samples to measure melatonin levels).
  • Assisting in scheduling participants at the Sleep and Behavioral Neuroscience Center
  • Escorting participants to the Magnetic Resonance Research Center for their fMRI scan and assisting with getting them set up for the scan
  • Instructing participants on the use of Actiwatches (similar to Fitbits) and downloading and processing of the Actiwatch data
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to ensure adequate numbers of assessments as outlined in the protocol.
  • Performs other research duties as assigned.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Psychology, Neuroscience, Sociology or related research field.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work evenings (including potentially on some Sundays).

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
