Description

Purpose:
Under the direction of the Artificial Heart Clinical Director and according to established standards and procedures, the Biomedical Engineer will assist during implantation, calibration, repair, and preventive maintenance on mechanical circulatory support (MCS) systems utilized at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. These systems include the Heartware Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), Jarvik LVAD, Evaheart LVAD, Heartmate XVE LVAD, Heartmate II LVAD, Cardiac Assist Technologies TandemHeart VAD, Thoratec PVAD, Thoratec IVAD, Levitronix VAD, Ventrassist LVAD, Abiomed Impella 2.5 & 5.0 VAD, Abiomed AB VAD, Berlin Heart VAD, and Arrow intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP). Incumbent will be involved in all design modifications made to improve the monitoring of MCS patients, including the OR, ICU, Cath Lab, patient wards, and any off-site location. Will assist MD's nurses and designated operators by providing technical assistance in the set up, operation, and evaluation of such equipment. Will also assist in clinical studies to be performed on MCS patients, obtain clinical data, and organize same into clinical database. Biomedical Engineer will assist in the training of patients and family members who are in the process of preparing for discharge from the hospital. Senior level engineers may participate in the on-call schedule and assist STAT MED-EVAC in the transport of IABP patients via ambulance, helicopter or fixed wing units. They will also have enhanced troubleshooting skills and increased clinical responsibilities enabling to support the technologies without immediate supervision from Senior Engineers. The Biomedical Engineer must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care that is relevant to patients under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span. Responsibilities:

  • Support the service-oriented commitment of the organization, especially to the adolescent, adult and geriatric patient population.
  • According to established schedules and protocols as defined by the AHCD and in conformance with various system requirements, inspect, test, calibrate and perform preventive maintenance on MCS equipment, insure documentation on all such activities and attend training sessions by system sponsors.
  • In conformance with vendor requirements and as per protocols that have been established by the AHCD, maintain equipment and parts inventory needed to minimize down time of malfunctioning equipment and to keep MCS systems in top operational condition.
  • Accompany MCS patients to all clinical tests or offsite location, while monitoring device operation and acting as a technical liaison.
  • Responsible for reporting defects in the tools and devices utilized in the performance of responsibilities to the AHCD.
  • Assist in instruction of staff in the use of equipment and techniques by means of formal lectures, in-service education and on the job training. This also includes formal training for MCS patients and their families.
  • Participate in the on-call schedule and provide technical support with enhanced troubleshooting skills to the in-house biomedical engineer, either via phone or with response to the hospital.
  • Assist in data acquisition and entry of mechanical circulatory support drive parameters and lab results into database and utilized engineering skills to analyze and interpret data.
  • Capable of performing implant and explant procedures for all MCS devices, including camera operation, without the assistance of the AHCD.
  • Monitor MCS patients in all off-site (out of hospital) locations and make proper independent decisions.
  • Follow the MCS patient's clinical condition as it might be related to technical device function; clinical complications, lab results and attend weekly patient-rounds meetings when necessary.
  • Maintain communications with medical staff and MCS vendors regarding patient condition, device operation and recommend device/console improvements.
  • Repair inoperative and malfunctioning equipment (to component level) as expeditiously as possible.
  • Consistently interact with patient and family members in a respectful, courteous and caring manner. Evaluate through direct observation and feedback from patient and/or family, physicians and nurses.

 

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical or other related Engineering.
  • 2 years experience with mechanical circulatory support systems or equivalent combination.
  • May in the course of duties be in rooms where medications are stored.
  • No contact with the medications is allowed.
