UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Working closely with Public Relations leadership, the Communications Specialist I, Public Relations supports and executes a dual public relations role supporting Internal Communications and Media Relations department team members and strategies for external news media and internal audiences across UPMC. This position supports, develops, and promotes positive stories to internal and external audiences to advance the mission. The Communications Specialist I assists with the planning, development, production, and brand consistency of internally designed projects and media relations strategies and execution in support of UPMC's mission, vision, and values.


This position needs to be accessible each week to UPMC Altoona and could be located at another UPMC location in the region, such as UPMC Bedford or UPMC Somerset. There is flexibility for partial remote work, the selected candidate must be on-site at a UPMC location two to three days per week.

  • Collaborate with team members to provide media relations support for hospitals, system clients, and special projects, fielding media requests and identifying and pitching stories to local media.
  • Collaborate with team members to serve as communication liaison to internal clients, providing consultation and planning support where appropriate.
  • Manage all facets of communications projects for UPMC internal clients, including writing for multiple channels, advising on tactical platforms, coordinating digital or video approaches, and more.
  • Independently plan, research, and write copy that is creative, well organized, concise, appropriate to the audience, channel, and purpose, and aligned with department style.
  • Take responsibility for approvals and accuracy of information communicated.
  • Complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize projects appropriately.
  • Demonstrate service-oriented behavior in line with UPMC Values in interactions with clients and co-workers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, health sciences, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a marketing communications position or related field.
  • Must have knowledge of traditional and digital communications/marketing best practices, excellent communication, multitasking, organizational, research/interviewing, writing, grammar, and interpersonal skills.
