UPMC Health Plan has an exciting opportunity for a Manager, User Experience in its Consumer Innovation department! This will be a remote (work from home) position. 

The Consumer Innovation UX team creates integrated, supportive, and engaging consumer experiences validated through research. A deep understanding of users’ needs and business objectives is fundamental to our success in solving complex problems through innovative design methods. Our vision is to simplify the intersection of health care and insurance through digital experiences that transform people's lives.

As a manager of user experience at UPMC Health Plan, you’re a problem-solver, working to discover, investigate and understand complicated health insurance issues. To improve the experience and healthcare journey of our members, you will collaborate with Visual Designers, Researchers, and Product Managers in an interdisciplinary environment.


UX Designers work across the digital product lifecycle, from problem-framing with business stakeholders and user research, to designing experiences, validating designs through testing, and delivering them to software development teams. In your role, you’ll lead and mentor a small team of designers to ensure that customers’ voices are heard and effectively represented in product design while also meeting business needs and requirements.



  • Lead and mentor a small team of UX designers. Direct work of designers, providing a critical eye and timely feedback to ensure consistency and quality of design deliverables.
  • Leverage tools and techniques that best convey UX and UI mockups, workflows, and wireframes. Work with UX Designers to define and articulate design processes.
  • Collaborate and facilitate diverse teams and stakeholders through an iterative discovery and design process to identify business priorities, align strategies and refine new solution and designs.
  • Present and build consensus for highest priority projects based on consumer research and business needs
  • Ensure web analytics, consumer research, and other data inform and validate designs.
  • Lead efforts to gather, interpret, and incorporate stakeholder feedback to shape design solutions that meet both business and consumer needs. Effectively manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Lead all aspects of user experience design. Encourage the growth of all direct and indirect reports through skill development and goal setting. Hold direct reports accountable for meeting performance standards and departmental performance goals. Mentor staff, measure performance, and complete regular performance reviews. Resolve employee issues in an effective and consistent manner.
  • Plan for and manage resources with current and future initiatives in mind. Assist junior staff in managing priorities and workloads.



  • Bachelors degree in Design, HCI, business, marketing, computer science, psychology or related field (required) Master's degree in related discipline a plus
  • Minimum of 5-7 years' experience in a consumer product/service design, product development, product management, product marketing, or related role (required)
  • Experience in a health care or wellness related industry may be beneficial but not required
  • Ability and desire to see big picture of how various technical and non-technical components of a health related service offering combine to create a single user experience.
  • Comfortable collaborating with technical (engineers) and non-technical teammates
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Desire to operate in a dynamic product development environment built on the principles of design thinking
  • Experience or education in the field of Service Design a substantial plus
  • Strong information design skills and proficiency in design programs such as Illustrator and/or InDesign
  • Skills building wireframes and using image editing software are a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently when required
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and produce high quality work
  • Track record of outstanding academic and professional achievement
