The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Research Assistant Clinical Research

Description

Purpose:


Under Faculty or Research Associate supervision, accurately performs research projects according to established study design and procedures. This study will be obtaining a variety of biospecimens from women with suspected or confirmed gynecologic cancers as well as healthy women.

The incumbent will be expected to track a subject's progress through her course of care and obtain the necessary biospecimens at identified time points and places, including the OR, Investigational Radiology, and various clinics throughout UPMC facilities. The incumbent may also screen potential subjects, consent them, possibly draw study bloods, and/or administer study questionnaire.


Responsibilities:

  • Maintain laboratory inventory, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies and their proper storage.
  • Follow appropriate research policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations and maintain scientific integrity including accurate data storage.
  • When position is required to work within the outpatient clinic, assist with patient care activities to ensure efficient and appropriate service.
  • Administer questionnaires and assist with procedures for obtaining patient screening and recruitment as well as obtaining research specimens.
  • Prepare, label, store and dispose of reagents, and calibrates equipment for research projects.
  • Maintain a safe clean laboratory-working environment including appropriate equipment maintenance and usage, by conforming to laboratory and hospital policies and standards.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Assist in obtaining educational resources necessary to perform and interpret research and to remain abreast in research area of function.
  • Perform approved research projects according to defined protocols and procedures including appropriate collection, recording, storage, and analysis of data and reporting of results.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology, or other basic science or Bachelor of Arts degree in a science or health related field with a minimum of 15 credit hours in related science courses.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for handling and processing specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with patients, staff, and investigators.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy in work, ability to multitask and set priorities, strong written and oral communication skills, function with a high degree of independence, excellent analytic and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of RedCap, BIOS, CTMA, CoPATH, MARS, Cancer Registry, EPIC, EPICCare, Beacon, CERNA preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminologies and coding systems such as UMLS, SNOMED, ICD-0, AJCC preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail, accuracy in work, ability to multitask and set priorities, strong written and oral communication skills, function with a high degree of independence, excellent analytic and interpersonal skills
  • Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Knowledge of RedCap or similar database
  • Excellent record keeping skills
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with patients, staff, and investigators. 

Preferred Experience:

  • Searching, extracting, entering, and cleaning data from databases 
  • Extracting data from electronic medical records
  • Consenting subjects and drawing blood as needed
