Endoscopy Technician (Full-Time) - GI Lab (UPMC Passavant)

ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is currently hiring a Full-Time Endoscopy Technician to support our GI Lab at the McCandless location.

 

Shift Details: Our Full-Time Endoscopy Technicians typically work five 8-hour shifts for a total of 40 hours every week. This is a Monday-Friday, daylight position with rotating weekend and evening on-call shifts in addition to rotating holiday on-call shifts requirements. Shift and scheduling details will be further discussed during the interview.

 

Orientation Details: Training for this position will be completed on-the-job in the GI Lab and typically requires a 6-week (minimum) orientation period with a preceptor.

 

The Endoscopy Technician is a valued step in the UPMC Endoscopy Technician Career Ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement. UPMC Passavant McCandless is hiring Endoscopy Technicians for our GI Lab.  The work of an Endoscopy Technician is both challenging and rewarding, many find this to be a wonderful lifelong career.  With the opportunity for on-the-job training, you will be responsible for preparing the procedure room and equipment, assisting the Physicians with instrumentation for routine and specialized procedures performed in the Endoscopy Suite.  In addition, you will assist the RN in preparing specimens while ensuring safety guidelines are maintained for both our patients and staff.  The GI Lab at Passavant McCandless is proud to provide a positive environment that facilitates growth and teamwork while focusing on providing outstanding patient care.

 

Purpose:

  • Perform a variety of skills in the GI Lab procedural rooms that assist the team, under the direction of the Physician and the Registered Nurse.
  • Assist the nursing staff by performing specific adolescent/adult/geriatric patient care and unit order activities.
  • Manage the care and maintenance of all video and fiberoptic endoscopy and instruments used in the G.I. Laboratory.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Care for and maintain all endoscopic equipment utilized in the G.I. Laboratory.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning properly before use.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, operation, and troubleshooting of processors and equipment.
  • Provides back up to Equipment Re-processors as needed.
  • Maintain supply inventory, rotate stock, and restock procedural rooms as needed.
  • Re-order supplies or report to responsible party the need to re-order items.
  • Return unused product or reusable equipment to proper storage place.
  • Assist in the preparation/obtaining of specimens, proper labeling of, and logging of specimens.
  • Deliver specimens to appropriate area as necessary.
  • Consistently offers assistance to coworkers.
  • Works cooperatively and promotes effective communication.
  • Receptive and encourages feedback. Assume responsibility for own development.
  • Attend/read relevant departmental in-service programs, actively participate in GI Lab staff meetings, participate in unit based performance improvement, perform secretarial functions as needed, and/or participate in self review as requested by department manager.
  • Prepares the procedure room correctly with the appropriate endoscope, equipment, and instruments.
  • Ensures equipment is functioning properly before use.
  • Anticipates the needs of the physician and what may be needed for the case.
  • Demonstrates competency in performance of skills.
  • *Can administer Lidocaine, Cetacaine, and Mylicon under the direct supervision of a nurse or physician and with documented competency.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Previous employment or training as an Endoscopy Technician, Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Surgical Tech, or other medical specialty such as Central Service Technician preferred but not required.

 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
