UPMC Health Plan is hiring a full time fully remote Lead Statistician for their Health Economics Department!  In this position, you are responsible for the comprehensive evaluation and analysis of data and information for clinical, financial, and quality-related initiatives. You must be well versed in statistical method design, program evaluation, and advanced statistical modeling. You will need the ability to translate program goals and objectives into testable hypotheses and develop methods by which to test and evaluate them. In this role, you will need the ability to work with senior and c-level executives to conceptualize program design and methods and to articulate quantitative results to internal and external audiences.



  • The Lead Statistician will use expert knowledge of medical claims, clinical data, and other data sources to properly analyze and interpret, through the application of quantitative analytics, the impact of care delivery and finance on Health Plan or Health Services Division performance.
  • Routinely create and analyze financial and clinical results, including output from predictive models.
  • Work closely with senior executives to scope out Program evaluation projects, independently develop evaluation plans and provide consultation on methods and optimal design.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and initiative in discovering errors in data or analyses, or determining the need for additional, follow-up analysis arising from the original assignment.
  • The successful Lead Statistician will: Independently prioritize and manage three to five advanced quantitative and/or statistical analytics projects simultaneously while receiving minimal supervision.
  • Produce customer-oriented reports that provide business context for the analysis and recommendations, requiring only minimal revision by the supervisor or analytics communications team.
  • Develop knowledge and expert understanding of products UPMC Health Plan insurance offerings, across all lines of business, and clinical initiatives to facilitate analysis.
  • Independently, or in teams, produce a combination of clinical program evaluation, quantitative financial analysis, and clinical utilization analysis to produce new insights into drivers of Health Plan or Health Services Division performance and clinical program efficacy.
  • Mentor more junior Statisticians. Healthcare is a fluid, dynamic, fast-paced environment. The successful employee is comfortable with ambiguity in priorities and is able to maintain professionalism and a team-player attitude in the face of analytical challenges of moderate-to-high complexity.
  • The Lead Statistician will consistently demonstrate a strong customer orientation, producing analyses on time and communicating results effectively.


  • Master's degree in mathematics, statistics, public health, decision sciences, economics, or a similar, quantitative field required
  • Minimum of six-to-eight years of work experience in a quantitative job function.
  • Demonstrated expertise in particularly-relevant analytical methods or health care business domain (payer/provider) may reduce time-in-position requirements.
  • Advanced Analytics Skill SetThe successful Lead Statistician can apply analytical and statistical software tools to produce complex, quantitative analyses of clinical programs and the health insurance industry.
  • Work typically includes the use of statistical analyses and predictive models.
  • Demonstrate consistent application of strong problem solving skills in the creation and interpretation of quantitative analyses, and to assist the supervisor in development of analysis plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to design rigorous program evaluation methods, including comparison group formulation and clinical, financial, and quality outcome analysis.
  • Interpret and communicate to management and colleagues, verbally and through written reports, the results of complex, quantitative analysis.
  • Prior experience with clinical modeling or data analysis is required.
  • Demonstrate prior application of analytics methods specifically to health insurance or health care delivery industry data at the advanced level.
  • Ability to leverage leading-edge analytics experience gained in other industries (e.g., population segmentation, risk analysis, optimization analytics, real-time analytics) to advance health care analytics will be strongly considered in lieu of health care experience.
  • General knowledge of business and economic principles strengthens the application.
  • Advanced Analytics Technology SkillsThe successful lead Statistician will have advanced-level experience using SAS, or R to conduct statistical analysis and modeling.
  • Demonstrated application of a similar programming language
