UPMC's University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a Specialty Counselor to support the Hepatobiliary Liver Cancer department.
This position will work Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm and is located at the Kaufman Building Suite 601 in Oakland.
Responsibilities of this position include: evaluation and treatment to patients diagnosed with cancer and their family members, evaluation of liver and kidney liver donors, evaluations for industry sponsored trials, testing of novel interventions for pilot studies, administrative responsibilities such as intakes, progress notes, audits, management of quality assurance programs. There are opportunities to participate in writing, research related activities, or committees but this is optional.
The Center for Excellence in Integrated Behavioral Medicine constitutes an interdisciplinary team focused on the development and integration of behavioral and biomedical knowledge and techniques, relevant to health and illness, as well as its application to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
The goals of the Center include:
- Promoting the integration of clinical services, training, and research
- Advancing research to facilitate the understanding of the association between psychological, social, behavioral, and biological factors that may influence the disease and health
- Integrating assessment and treatment of behaviors and psychiatric symptoms, that have been demonstrated to increase morbidity and mortality, into routine medical care
- Offering interdisciplinary training opportunities across disciplines
Purpose:
This position will provide psychological analysis to transplant patients as well as oncology patients through the Liver Cancer Center. Position is responsible for clinical and psychological evaluation of patients and their families in collaboration with the medical care from their physicians.
Responsibilities:
- Follows all departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
- Develops initial treatment plan in order to facilitate disposition planning.
- Facilitates the flow of information to promote effective communication regarding patient care including Medical Records functions on the weekends or as needed.
- Handles responsibility of mental health delegate system including ability to screen requests, provides education regarding the process and ability to generate petition and follow-up.
- Provides telephone assessments to patients, significant others, professional representatives in obtaining both relevant clinical information as well as registration information in order to provide appropriate disposition and referrals that serve the patient's needs, including outpatient referrals, emergency services or an outside agency referral.
- Attends all mandatory in-service trainings, competency trainings, staff meetings and other activities as assigned by supervisor.
- Triages patients towards an appropriate clinical disposition.
- Maintains a professional appearance and behaviors that positively represent the hospital to patients, families, and the community. Follows the hospital's dress code and consistently wears the hospital employee identification badge. Follows all hospital rules on conduct.
- Provides assessments of patients and families in collaboration with attending psychologist and other staff.
- Maintains confidentiality per hospital policies and procedures and does not inappropriately access or distribute any sensitive information or allow others to do so.
- Understands and appropriately follows all safety and disaster policies including the proper reporting of all accidents, unsafe conditions, and incidents.
- Satisfactorily completes all assigned competencies.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree required or PhD preferred in psychology, psychology nursing, social work, or related field.
- Must be able to provide direct care to patients and their families.
- Previous experience in hospital setting preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) OR Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Driver's License
- Act 34
