Provides supervision and management support for the electrical shops of PUH and MUH. Plans maintenance and operations of electrical systems for MUH, PUH and various UPMC E&M managed facilities. Diagnoses building systems problems and implements the preventive maintenance program for systems within areas and/or trades' responsibilities. Coordinates activities with contractors and tenants of assigned buildings, which impacts mechanical systems. Initiates punch lists for new system startups. Analyzes building system data and initiates corrective action when necessary.


  • Communicate with Infection Control, Environmental Health and Safety, Security and other various support departments to provide efficient interaction and necessary notification.
  • Monitor the employees for adherence to hospital and department policy.
  • Inspect routinely all areas of responsibilities and equipment operation for safety and housekeeping and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Schedule and plans service outages when necessary for repair, alteration or additions to systems. Strategically plans course of action to allow work completion while not impacting facility operations.
  • Efficiently alter working hours to assure proper management and supervisory interaction with off-shift operations with subordinate personnel.
  • Provide a forum for the discussion and resolution of personnel problems to ensure positive and professional interaction. Utilizes CQI and task force procedures to correct or improve system problems or operations.
  • Provide and maintain outside service contracts.
  • Supervise directly the MUH and PUH electric shops.
  • Accompany Environmental Health and Safety inspector on regularly scheduled inspections and takes steps necessary to correct any noted deficiencies.
  • Direct, at the request of the Engineering and Maintenance Department and the hospital, the investigation of continuing problems and uses all necessary resources to follow through to a permanent solution.
  • Review, upgrade and initiate operating and maintenance policies as well as work with Environmental Health and Safety and Security to sustain safety and efficiency procedures and policies.
  • Oversee building systems electrical projects to ensure efficient use of manpower and materials and that systems and equipment meet hospital standards.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of training programs, both in-house and through equipment manufacturers, to increase individual skill development and quality of service.
  • Compile and records subordinates' time for Kronos payroll system.
  • Periodically examine and update various job interview procedures for maintenance personnel.
  • Review planned renovations to detect possible negative impacts to the facility and suggest alternates..
  • Provide, coordinate and continually upgrades the PM program with supervisor. Aligns the PM work to the individual shops and ensures completion of the work in the scheduled time period.
  • Respond to requests from Infection Control and the Environmental Health and Safety Department to ensure proper environmental conditions for the patients and staff.
  • Periodically review shop personnel's performance using accepted department standards.
  • Initiate and monitors all related plant equipment and building systems and conducts testing and training sessions in accordance with JCAHO stipulations.
  • Work with the supervisor in developing and upgrading maintenance programs for hospital buildings and equipment, in evaluating hospital systems with respect to cost, service, efficiency and energy cost.
  • Work with construction management in coordinating interface of all related building systems for the hospital and off-site buildings, to aid and assist in all emergency situations, and to assist in startups including producing punch lists and ensuring corrections.
  • Individually reviews performance of subordinates and provide a written and oral account annually. Update job descriptions and performance standards as needed.
  • Supervise directly in-house electrical projects to ensure efficient use of manpower and materials and that systems and equipment meet hospital standards.
  • Oversee daily work schedules to allow optimum output per hours worked. Uses innovative scheduling to optimize available resources.
  • Work with supervisors to bring personnel problems in the initial stages to a comprehensive solution to avoid major grievances. Advises supervisor of either the resolution of the problem or the need for further investigation.
  • Provide costs, personnel requirements and assistance to supervisor and construction supervisor on renovation and construction projects by outside contractors and in-house personnel.
  • Assist in administering the Contractual Agreement for Local 95.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Apprenticeship and/or trade school training in electrical maintenance.
  • Five years experience in hospital maintenance with the knowledge and ability to coordinate electrical trades.
  • Working knowledge of the physical plant, preventive maintenance, general maintenance operations and DDC systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, draw sketches of work assignments and supervise and motivate subordinates.
  • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills.
  • Formal training of diverse management techniques on university-level a plus.
