UPMC has an exciting opportunity or a Senior Software Architect – CCBH (Remote) role. This is a Monday – Friday, daylight position and while the position is based in downtown Pittsburgh at the Heinz 57 Center, this team has transitioned to working remotely full-time and will continue to do so post-COVID-19, permanently. Qualified candidates from remote regional or US locations are welcome to apply.

The Senior Software Architect – CCBH (Remote) will play a lead role in our workflow automation projects as we aim to transform the future of behavioral healthcare delivery for Medicaid recipients. After gaining a deep understanding of our system, our ideal candidate will use their expertise to define a technical roadmap to migrate our mission critical web application to the Azure cloud.

The Senior Software Architect – CCBH (Remote) position requires a high degree of technical Cloud architecture expertise in design, development, and implementation of architecture strategy across various domains and projects. This senior member of the Internet Strategy team is responsible for our application’s computing architecture components: a front-end platform, back-end platforms, a desired migration to a cloud-based delivery, and a UPMC managed network. 

The Cloud Architect Senior contributes to executive strategic leadership planning and leads architectural feasibility analyses on potential future projects to management. This position oversees the development, maturation, and integration of Cloud Infrastructure Architectures based on customer provided requirements to meet customer needs. They will be responsible for the Cloud infrastructure design and implementation for Community Care’s secure ePortal.


  • Works with team members to develop architectural strategies.
  • Drives process for technical reviews and enforces quality Cloud engineering practices for assigned projects.  Accountable for involving other design and architecture resources when appropriate. 
  • Provides technical design and Cloud architecture advice on major new platforms and products.  Provides guidance to project teams in all phases of SDLC.
  • Documents Cloud architectures and performs research and analysis required for project proposals, system modifications, and new products.
  • Owns the overall system design, architecture, security, scalability, reliability and performance of Cloud environments.
  • Evaluates new tech and incorporates it into team's technical architecture.
  • Takes ownership and delivery responsibility for special projects or initiatives.
  • Maintains current industry knowledge and trends, keep abreast of new technologies, attends educational events and participates in committee work as appropriate.
  • Initiates contacts with key technologists and other subject matter experts.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots architecture related issues in a timely fashion.
  • Provides input into the strategic direction, guidance and integration of products and services to management based on feasibility analyses conducted with others. Understands corporate and departmental goals and alignment.
  • Evaluates existing systems against future strategic needs and develops a technical roadmap that incorporates third-party, existing, and new custom solutions to meet the strategic needs of the organization.
  • Analyzes existing Cloud architectures to identify inefficiencies, redundancies, obsolescence, technology support gaps, and identifying reuse components.
  • Evaluates new third-party software products, tools and technologies, participating in project assessments as necessary.
  • Provide executive updates in both written and spoken format.
  • Prepare executive presentations as needed.
  • Communicate activities, statuses, accomplishments, and strategic direction with executive management.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  •  Performs other duties as assigned


  • An undergraduate degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or management, or equivalent experience is required.
  • An advanced degree in related field is a plus 4+ years of Cloud Engineering or Cloud Architect experience (required).
  • An AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional certification (required).
  • Has a deep understanding of system development in cloud environments, including Software as Service (SaaS), Platform as Service (PaaS), or Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
  • Holds deep technical mastery and business knowledge on Cloud computing, DevOPS tooling, and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience driving discussions with senior personnel regarding trade-offs, best practices, project management and risk mitigation.
  • Great design and problem-solving skills with a strong bias for Cloud engineering and clinical excellence.
  • Strategic thinking and analytical skills with demonstrated ability to combine broad technical, business, clinical, and political factors (required).
  • Has experience architecting large-scale, highly available, mission-critical systems Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills and possesses good presentation skills (required).
  • Possesses diplomacy and interpersonal skills to leads others to provide inputs for the purpose of sharing with customers, partners, and higher management on vision and need for key technologies (required).
  • Experience in architecting, incubating, and building new Cloud computing technologies that have broad impact.
  • Demonstrates the ability to anticipate and solve large, complex technical problems by performing work that is highly complex and varied in nature.
  • Demonstrated experiences innovating beyond the state of the art.
