UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a full-time Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to support the Histology Lab! This role will be scheduled evening shift, 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Histotechnologist role starts at $22.92/hr.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
- Complies with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures and work practices.
- Demonstrates progression of skils towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
- Performs ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
- Performs QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
- Processes and prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping.
- Embeds and cuts specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
- Supports the academic mission of the department.
- Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.
- Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
- Maintains instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
Qualifications
Histotechnician:
- High school diploma.
- Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam:
- Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR;
- Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
- 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.
Histotechnologist:
- Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):
- B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years OR;
- B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years.
- Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist.
- 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Am Society Clinical Pathology Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 1 year of hire.
