Purpose:
Responsible for the coordination and dispatch of laboratory specimens to outside reference laboratories, hospital, and research testing facilities; responsible for handling of specimens related to research protocol; assists with the maintenance of long-term specimen storage.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection requirements and shipping protocols for outside laboratories; facilitates specimen handling and shipping related to research or study protocols.
- Demonstrates knowledge of specimen packaging and transport requirements; maintains required biohazard shipping certification.
- Follows regulatory and departmental requirements and procedures for identifying laboratories of reference testing and dispatch of specimens; maintains accurate records of requests and reports.
- Orders and accessions tests in the laboratory information system; enters and retrieves results as required; maintains department databases or electronic files as required.
- Interacts with laboratory customers and outside reference laboratories courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
- Monitors and maintains supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; uses materials in a cost-effective manner.
- Monitors and maintains laboratory specimen storage systems, ie. refrigerators, freezers. Maintains records and retrieves specimens as requested.
- Demonstrates independent judgment and recognizes priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Science.
- One year of laboratory experience preferred.
- Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
