Do you want to work outside enjoying the sunshine, rather than in a facility? If this sounds like a job for you, UPMC's Community Life Team needs a Casual RN for their team. The Community Life team is an ambulance crew that responds to emergency calls and transports the critically ill from facility to facility. 1 on 1 patient/staff ratio. The Professional Critical Care Ground (CCG) Nurse will work as part of the critical care ground team.

The Professional Critical Care Ground (CCG) Nurse will follow PA DOH BLS, ALS and CCG guidelines; and is responsible for the care of critically ill and injured patients. Responsibilities include patient care incorporating assessment, stabilization and intervention techniques consistent with standards and protocols approved by the Medical Director. The Professional CCG Nurse is expected to execute independent judgment, to deliver appropriate care that is consistent with the clinical protocols, when contact with a medical command physician is not possible.

Responsibilities:

  • Critcal care in the pre-hospital arena
  • Maintaining the ABC's of a patient emergency - Airway, breathing, circulation
  • The RN will start IV's, intubate patients, splint broken bones, give medications, etc. to help stabalize patient while en-route to the hospital
  • Provide advanced life support to critically ill or injured patients in adherence with established protocols and standards of care; assessing online medical command or other resources when appropriate. 
  • Documents appropriate assessment, interventions, and other pertinent patient information in a timely manner.
  • Collects and promptly processes demographic, medical necessity, and other necessary billing information.
  • Selects and uses personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of the anticipated hazard.
  • Demonstrates the ability to establish a rapport with customers; including the ability to create and sustain a positive relationship; regardless of circumstances, environment, or patient presentation.
  • Demonstrates competency related to pharmacological interventions.
  • Completes all official documentation in a timely manner such as payroll, expense reports, orientation forms, etc. Adheres to rules for scheduling, including schedule requests, minimum time, and availability.
  • Demonstrates skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any environment; using educational resources that are required or made available.
  • Actively participates in the development and training of new staff.
  • Ensures patient and family confidentiality and dignity at all times.
  • Participates constructively in the peer-review driven quality improvement program.
  • Responds promptly and efficiently to all requests for service.
  • Participates in scheduled and unscheduled outreach activities, representing the UPMC system.

Qualifications

  • Three years clinical experience in a critical care hospital setting OR with a busy advanced life support or critical care ambulance service
  • Critical Care RN certification helpful
  • RN applicants who have two years of experience and functioned previously as a Flight/Critical Care Transport Paramedic may be considered based on assessment of his/her role as a paramedic, years in the role and approval of a transition plan by the Medical Director
  • Must be eligible to receive medical command authorization by the Medical Director, have reliable transportation, and be willing to travel to any base site as assigned.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the prescribed orientation program, including classroom, clinical rotations, educational competencies, and on the job training.
  • Must work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities, and specialized equipment

  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
