Patient Care Technician - Dialysis TCU (Part-Time)


UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a part-time Patient Care Technician to support the Dialysis TCU unit on the 5th floor of UPMC Presbyterian Hospital!

The Patient Care Technician will work two daylight shifts between Monday and Friday, with no evenings or weekends required! Shifts are tentatively 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but can be further discussed/confirmed in interviews. 

Dialysis TCU at UPMC Presbyterian is a new out-patient dialysis unit, specifically utilized as a transitional dialysis unit! The goal of this unit is to provide outpatient dialysis care for the first four weeks for all new hemodialysis patients, prior to starting treatment at their pre-defined outpatient dialysis location. The patients here will be engaged in an intensive education program, and will have access to the integrated transplant, access surgery (vascular or PD), and palliative care team evaluations on-site with the aim to expedite vascular access, time to transplant, and defined patient goals.  

All hired candidates will complete a mandatory training course. This is a paid training program that spans over two weeks. The main program is weekdays and daylight hours, with a combination of virtual and in-person days. Attendance is mandatory for the entire training. A one-day training is available on Saturdays for those who have completed a clinical rotation in a hospital, or have specific transferable in-patient/hospital experience.

The Patient Care Technician provides routine patient care and supports the department services in accordance with established policies and procedures. This role will be directed by nurses and/or physicians to ensure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times.

Patient care duties may include, but are not limited to, ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, blood glucose), vital signs, simple dressings, EKGs, bladder scans, and all specimen collections. Dialysis-specific duties include, but are not limited to, preparing and sanitizing dialysis equipment, ensuring the collection of all required dialysis samples, initiating and discontinuing dialysis treatments (under the direction of the RN), and supporting inventory and ordering of dialysis supplies/equipment.

Previous dialysis experience is highly preferred!



  • Must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and turning and repositioning patients), PLUS point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), and clean catch/mini catheter urine collection. In addition, simple dressings, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections.
    • All competencies must be achieved.
  • Ensures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.

  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
  • May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital-related information.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
  • Completes department clerical functions, as needed.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must also have either:
    • 1 year of experience, OR
    • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
    • Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. 
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Paramedic, or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Dialysis experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work with technical equipment and learn (through on-the-job training) the function and monitoring of equipment used for dialysis and water treatment preferred.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. ACLS preferred.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
