Database Manager | The Affective Neuroscience and Developmental Psychopathology Lab

Description

The Affective Neuroscience and Developmental Psychopathology Lab is a dynamic, busy clinical neuroscience lab with a team atmosphere and a culture of respect and inclusivity. The mission is meaningful and important: to reduce suffering by investigating the brain mechanisms relevant to the pathophysiology and treatment of depression, suicidality, and related problems in adolescents and young adults. The several ongoing studies include a variety of techniques, including neuroimaging, neuromodulation, ambulatory monitoring, and pharmacologic manipulation. The Database Manager will be responsibile for designing and managing databases across studies, but focusing especially on a complex, ambitious, busy study that involves collecting detailed data about mental health, then using innovative therapeutic techniques, and finally using sophisticated quantitative approaches to compute who improves, how to assign people to treatments, and how people change over time as a result of development and treatment. This project has a huge amount of data of many different types, and they’ll need to set up a consistent, reliable, and structured flexible system to enter/store/access the data. They’ll be supervised by me but will work closely with project coordinator(s) and other collaborators on the study (e.g., statistician).

This position is grant funded.

Purpose:

Lead data technology innovation and application efforts, oversee all project database management procedures, lead some statistical analysis efforts, supervise staff, provide conceptual input and analysis to facilitate special project tasks and facilitate all software, hardware and data communication efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement study-specific data management process, including data entry systems, data management systems, quality assurance, and front end users’ interfaces.
  • Coordinate and plan projects for all on-going technology innovations and applications used in various research projects. Provide logistical planning, tracking of projects components, and enforce accountability for deadlines and expectations among various data core staff members.
  • Integrate data management systems across multiple projects so that necessary innovations from one study are modified and utilized in all other studies and there is consistency, comparability and efficiency across studies.
  • Enforce policies and procedures to ensure compliance across projects with program-wide best practice.
  • Coordinate communication among project personnel regarding data management issues.
  • Train and supervise staff with data analysis responsibilities in the appropriate use of techniques, including standardization of analytical databases and statistical output to allow analytical tasks to be completed and reference efficiently across the program.
  • Perform other duties as related to research project as requested by Principal Investigator, coordinator, or supervisor.

Qualifications

  • 4 year academic degree includes courses in Computer Programming, Systems Analysis, System Development, or Systems Engineering

OR

  • has acquired Core IT skills and knowledge via practical experience.
  • Experience with data management in a clinical research setting preferred.
  • Experience working with colleagues to design and implement new data management systems preferred.
  • Serve as lead resource for dealing with challenging technical or business issues.
  • Demonstrate prevention techniques to avoid repeat issues and crisis situations.
  • Knowledge in a primary discipline and working knowledge in multiple relevant disciplines to create solutions for highly complex business situations.
  • Demonstrate success leading teams or collaborating with business partners and peer-level professionals from other IT specialties from UPMC or vendor or consulting organizations.
  • Establish and refine the essential IT principles, departmental policies, procedures and analytical rules that guide their application in practical situations.
  • Higher education (Bachelors/Masters) may be required per Grants.
