UPMC's Payer Applications department is actively hiring a Data Architect- IT (Fully Remote).

UPMC Health Plan is interested in hiring an experienced Data Architect to work closely with UPMC and Work Partners analytics and data management teams to provide oversight and direction on database structures, and integration strategy based on the data storage, analytics, and retrieval needs. The candidate in this role should be analytically minded, an excellent problem-solver, and able to work either independently or as part of a team. Under the direction of Architecture Department, the Data Architect will champion the use of the data and analytics. Also, he/she will lead coordination and orchestration of the overall database modeling and design which will deliver significant impact. The focus of this position will be to have a full mastery and in-depth understanding of the database structure, data warehouse principles and mentor less experienced team members.

  • Strategy & Innovation - Provides strategic direction, guidance and integration of products and services related to analytics and data domain. Understands departmental and organizational goals and alignments as related to the data architecture.
  • Application Data Architecture - Provide guidance and direction on architecting and implementing the conceptual, the logical and the physical data models to support the enterprise information strategies of the UPMC, the business intelligence agenda as well as our self-service analytics approach. Work directly with project teams and solution owners to ensure that new and existing solutions adhere to the architecture standards and that they have controls in place to maintain a high level of data quality.
  • Scope of Influence – Provide technical leadership and oversight of the execution, the design, and the thinking into a data architecture domain. management, administration, execution and integration of data store that supports the responsibilities of the related team.
  • Knowledge & Skill - Typically possesses seven years of relevant work experience. Requires technical mastery and business knowledge in analytics, data warehouse and data governance and master data management. Translates complex data problems into solution designs that clearly illustrate business value. Develops and executes technical plans aligning with the business strategies.
  • Interactions with Others - Responsible to ensure that the business intelligence team and technology services team is managing and maintaining the data catalog, definitions, standards, governance, and regulations surrounding data in the environment. Successfully completes projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach. Works in collaboration with team and offers feedback, where appropriate, to complete individual and group efforts. Shows the ability to adjust and be flexible to change by adapting approach when necessary. Mentors less experienced staff.




  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field with 7 years of relevant work experience OR 11 years total relevant work experience.
  • Proven work experience as a Data Architect, Data Scientist, Data Analyst or similar role preferable in health care and insurance services
  • Experience with enterprise data management technologies including data mining and segmentation techniques, data warehouses, ETL tools, SQL, NoSQL Oracle, and master data management solutions preferred.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI ) preferred.
  • Preferred experience with Microsoft Azure BI and Analytics Stack including Azure SQL and related technologies
  • Proven ability to work in distributed database and systems Experience gathering and analyzing system requirements preferred.
  • Highly driven and self-motivated to exceed expectations.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrated ability to lead in a team-based environment.
  • Proficient in both oral and written communication.
  • Propose database solutions through potential system designs
  • Strong organizational skills – must be able to design, lead and manage teams composed of stakeholders across diverse teams/domains
  • Practical experience in participating and running data management and reporting programs preferred.
  • Experience in NoSQL data warehouse like snowflake preferred.


  • Predictive, Data Mining, & Machine Learning experience
  • Agile and scrum methodologies is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with data warehouse modeling methodologies (Kimball, Inmon, DataVault, etc.)
  • Experience dealing with real-time and large batch data pipelines
