The successful candidate will be part of the Academic Services  Section of the UPMC Legal Department’s Health Services Group.  The Section provides general, corporate, and regulatory legal counsel to the following: UPMC’s academic medical center hospitals and UPMC’s system-wide educational and research functions, including the UPMC Graduate Medical Education sponsored training program, the UPMC Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Support Services (OSPARS), conflict of interest management in clinical trials and proposed industry/vendor relationships, investigational drug and device procurement, and others.  The Section also provides legal counsel and management liaison with University of Pittsburgh committees and offices that have significant connection to UPMC education and research, such as the University’s Institutional Review Board, Conflict of Interest Committee, Office of Research,  and others.

UPMC has a Center for Engagement and Inclusion that is charged with executing leading diversity strategies to advance the organization’s diversity management capability and its national presence as a diversity leader. This includes having Employee Resource Groups, such as PRIDE Health or UPMC ENABLED (Empowering Abilities and Leveraging Differences) Network, that support the implementation of our diversity strategy.


  • Supported by senior UPMC attorneys as needed, provide legal counsel and legal services to  UPMC’s academic enterprise, including in particular its clinical trials and graduate medical education offices.

  • Provide legal advice on a variety of agreements related to pre-clinical and clinical trial agreements and service arrangements.

  • Provide legal advice related to laws and regulations governing medical and clinical research and development, including human subjects research, clinical research billing, and drug and device law. 

  • Apply legal knowledge, analysis and judgment to health care and general corporate legal matters in areas such as Medicare, Medicaid, licensure, accreditation, medical staff, patient care law, compliance (e.g., Anti-Kickback Statute, False Claims Act, HIPAA), federal and state grants and contracts, corporate and commercial law, taxation, real estate, and employment.

  •  Provide counsel to managers and staff and address and resolve legal issues as they arise on a daily basis, such as in the areas of regulatory and patient care law. 

  • Conduct legal research and perform legal analysis.

  •  Provide guidance with respect to contractual arrangements and prepare contractual and other legal documentation.

  •  Review and recommend changes to corporate policy to ensure compliance with legal requirements.

  •  Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • J.D. Degree required.

  • Minimum 4 years experience as a practicing attorney, including significant experience in health law or another relevant specialty, like academic medical centers and/or research institutions.

  • Health law expertise, is preferable including knowledge of laws impacting academic institutions, research organizations, or universities.

  • Pennsylvania license or obtain such license within six (6) months of date-of-hire required.

  • Strong legal analytical skills, communication skills, solid legal writing skills, and problem solving and conflict resolution skills are highly preferred.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to independently handle unique, sensitive and moderately complex legal matters, with minimal supervision and oversight.

  • Ability to apply legal knowledge, analysis and judgment to address moderately complex legal problems arising in the organization.
