UPMC is hiring a full-time Improvement Specialist for the Ophthalmology Division.  You will be working Monday - Friday daylight shifts at the Oakland or UPMC Mercy location.  You may be required to travel to the satellite offices as needed to review their sites. This position is responsible for leading the ophthalmology service line quality initiatives for the UPMC Health System and is embedded at the department level to ensure swift and precise follow-up. This can involve assessment of the current state of how care is delivered, clinical outcomes, addressing variations, meeting local and national standards and analysis of operations and processes. Additionally, this position works collaboratively with the Wolff Center on aligning respective work. The person needs to have skilled research experience to be able to communicate accurate design and execution and sharing of the findings across the service line is critical. The role engenders commitment, fosters cultural changes, disseminates information, and provides support for behavioral and process changes. The overarching focus of this role is to foster a high performing culture in the ophthalmology service line to ensure high quality, safe patient care.


  • Demonstrates exceptional improvement skills and leads improvement using the UPMC improvement model to drive ophthalmology service line improvement.
  • Creates a supportive environment within the service line where improvement is being done that is sensitive to address the issues and needs of that area by regularly consulting with the senior leadership of the service line.
  • Applies research and the process of research in improvement of quality.
  • Works to ensure that quality improvement and innovation work remains focused on one more of the following goals: patient centeredness, staff vitality, process efficiency, waste reduction and safe patient care.
  • Leads the assessment of all patient safety concerns such as complications, patient complaints or others using a standard root cause process and looks for trends to pro-actively mitigate and put controls to manage. Leads and engages teams across the organization and interacts with all levels of executives at times.
  • Partners with all service line leaders to implement and deploy change across the ophthalmology service line.
  • Effectively communicates improvements that are made to work teams, staff, managers, and administrators and other executives while collaborating across ophthalmology to other specialties that send or receive our patients.
  • Skilled with representing UPMC by presenting accomplishments at regional and national forums.
  • Maintains accountability for ongoing self-development activities especially related to presentation facilitation, change management and application of quality improvement activities.
  • Utilized expert engagement approaches to drive change and skilled presentations to all levels in the service line.
  • Effectively coordinates the assessment of current operational processes at various UPMC entities.



  • Master's degree in Healthcare or related field, or completion of two (2) years in a 4-year Bachelor to PhD/DNP program required.
  • Five (5) years of related experience with three (3) years of hospital and/or healthcare experience required.
  • Demonstrated strong interest in research with experience in writing.  Mastery of office suite and statistical analysis skills with working knowledge of patient safety principles and licensure regulations,
  • Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization, and state/federal standards.   Knowledge of information systems and process improvement techniques Must be able to demonstrate skills to understand and interpret data. Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities. Exemplary critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others.
