Coordinator, Lab Animal Research


UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full-time Coordinator, Lab Animal Research to support the 8940 - 8940 MWRIF Animal Facility department!

This position will work the day shift. Hours are subject to change based on business needs.

Responsible for the daily management and operations of the Research Institute.


  • Development and implementation of the organizational plan for the Research Institute.
  • Serve as the Institute facility liaison with researchers within MWRI and with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies.
  • Develop, update and maintain laboratory policies and procedures in accordance with Research Institute standards.
  • Responsible for the overall budgetary process for the Research Institute, as well as development and general management of research budgets.
  • Work with the Research Institute Director and other investigators, as assigned, to design and implement research-related activities.
  • Assist in the development of, and implement and maintain, effective quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing programs.
  • Responsible for developing and enforcing adequate safety standards, security measures, maintenance schedules and universal precautions.
  • Facilitate the acquisition and handling of equipment, ensures its operational efficiency and accuracy, and secures necessary repairs.
  • Develop appropriate management control procedures, including maintenance, retrieval and storage of specimens, records and reports, as well as authorization procedures.  Assist in establishing pricing schedules.
  • Responsible for selection, training and appraisal of designated Institute staff.  Oversee the development, orientation and training programs for Institute facility personnel.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Basic Science.
  • Master's Degree or degree candidate in relevant scientific discipline preferred.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible technical and operational experience in a research environment.
  • Previous experience as an assistant manager and/or manager in a laboratory or research environment. Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit.
  • This individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. 
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department's policy and procedures.
  • Demonstrated management and analytical skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to handle, process and evaluate specimens for testing.
