UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Nurse Educator - Labor & Delivery

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full-time Nurse Educator to support the Labor & Delivery department! The Nurse Educator will be part of an education team to support the various nursing units across UPMC Magee.  The Labor & Delivery Department at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is an extraordinarily high volume maternity unit dedicated to caring for patients experiencing normal/natural child birth, as well as complicated high risk deliveries, patients with drug addictions, and pregnancy loss. The Labor & Delivery Department houses 5 operating rooms and 10 PACU bays directly on the unit. You will work with many different OB disciplines and providers with various approaches to child birth—including family practice physicians, OB attending physicians, and midwives. Previous postpartum or labor & delivery experience is strongly preferred, however candidates with med-surg and/or ICU experience will be considered. 

This position will work mostly daylight shifts Monday through Friday with the flexibility to meet the educational needs of the unit.
Hours are subject to change based on business needs.

The Nurse Educator, a professional registered nurse, has the authority, responsibility, and accountability for delivery of nursing education. Orientation, continuing education, and ongoing support for the nursing staff are the main objectives. The Nurse Educator must demonstrate the knowledge and educational skills necessary to assess, plan and provide the educational programs that are required.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication.
  • Conveys information and ideas clearly through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.
  • Actively participates in department or practice-specific quality improvement efforts. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care identifies research issues or articles related to clinical specialty or areas of interest
  • Serve as a formal and informal mentor for new staff members and mentor new preceptors to be successful in their role.
  • Serve as a resource/consultant for patients, nursing staff and other disciplines in area of specialty.
  • Participate in department-based Performance Improvement projects.
  • Participate in professional and community organizations.
  • Facilitates orientation and general continuing education programs. Utilize nursing process in teaching staff how to manage the care of patients including assessment, interdisciplinary planning, implementation, evaluation of patient care, teaching and discharge planning.
  • Lead in the development of standards of nursing care and nursing policies.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate orientation and continuing education programs based on learning needs, clinical priorities, and organizational resources.
  • Take a leading role in major hospital-wide projects.
  • Facilitates student experiences as appropriate.

 

Qualifications

  • BSN required (BSN waived if MSN obtained in program not conferring BSNs). MSN preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience
  • Relevant teaching experience

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • UPMC approved certification preferred
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
