Across UPMC, our guiding principle is to always prioritize the safety of our employees, patients, and members. UPMC believes that vaccination is important, helps protect all, and advocates that everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated.

UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Quality Nurse



UPMC is looking for a Quality Nurse to cover the UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport campuses!

This position covers daylight Monday-Friday. Recent hospital experience preferred. 

Provides meaningful data regarding consistencies in standards of care and assists hospital teams with data relating to quality improvement activities. Participates in quality oversight initiatives, and monitors patient safety initiatives to improve and enhance care delivery.


  • Works independently or within teams based on project needs.
  • Builds and mends relationships among colleagues within the framework of a healthy workplace while being sensitive to cultural and other individual needs.
  • Role models keen cultural awareness including preventing and addressing horizontal violence and impairment.
  • Maintains a conscious balance between work and personal life through prioritization and delegation of responsibilities.
  • Reviews and extracts patient information from the medical record
  • Understands and maintains knowledge of regulatory and/or standards by actively reviewing and updating process to reflect the requirements.
  • Analyzes clinical and behavioral situations, identifying learning opportunities to improve patient care practices.
  • Collects, prepares, and presents accurate, timely data to display results of process improvements that allow for trending and easy to understand.
  • Reviews data and analyzes outcomes for patterns and trends in order to communicate findings related to standards, evidenced based practices, and policies for the improvement of processes.
  • Utilizes appropriate computer systems to obtain data, enter data and develop reporting tools.
  • Analyzes clinical and behavioral situations, identifying learning opportunities to improve patient care practices.
  • Regularly seeks feedback on performance and applies continuous professional improvement.
  • Develop and present formal and informal patient safety education to hospital staff throughout the organization on an ongoing basis.
  • Investigate actual and potential patient safety risks in the clinical operations of the hospital through rounds, chart reviews, interviews, physical inspection and other means as necessary.
  • Adhere to the organization's Patient Safety Plan, goals and fulfills patient Safety objectives. Adhere to the national patient safety goals by planning, directing, and monitoring implementation aspects related to those goals. Adhere to regulatory requirements set forth by federal and state agencies relative to patient safety.
  • Review actual and potential patient safety occurrences with physicians, department heads and managers, identifying trends, making recommendations for action, and assuring compliance with the program.
  • Maintain investigative, claim and legal files with strict adherence to confidentiality mandates. Assist, as needed, the Hospital Legal Counsel with the preparation of cases during litigation processes.
  • Communicates significant events, potential or actual claims, through established mechanisms in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to the on-call rotation in order to be informed of any patient safety occurrences.
  • Serve as a role model to foster a patient safety culture in the organization.
  • Regularly seeks feedback on performance and applies continuous professional improvement.


  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field required, either at time of hire/transfer, or must be enrolled in a program within one year of hire/transfer date and completed within three years of enrollment.
  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Exemplary critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting.
