This position is responsible for oversight of inpatient hospital palliative care consultative services, outpatient (hospital-based) palliative care clinics, and supportive care services across UPMC. This position works closely with the Medical Director, Palliative and Supportive Institute and in partnership with colleagues from the UPMC Health Services Division, to lead care delivery teams, operational processes, and educational strategies in both inpatient and outpatient hospital-based palliative care services. The position ensures the capture of appropriate performance metrics for these areas.



  • Establishes and drives quality improvement and P4P initiatives in hospital and ambulatory care settings to enhance palliative and supportive care in conjunction with the Wolff Center.
  • Serves as a clinical and programmatic leader and resource for all UPMC Palliative Care Programs to assist in program development, staffing, QI and reporting.
  • Develops and enhances palliative and supportive care services across UPMC Health Services Division.
  • Supervises management team, Palliative Care and provides support and leadership for personnel-related issues of hospital-based and ambulatory palliative care, including recruitment, onboarding, ongoing continuing education and professional development of Advanced Practice Providers, Social Workers, and other providers in hospital-based and ambulatory care settings.
  • Works closely with designated administrative counterparts from the physician / professional practice management, to provide education and support to professionals (MDs, APPs) engaged in providing clinical service in inpatient and outpatient hospital-based areas.
  • Collaborates with leadership and stakeholders across UPMC Health Services Division to support compliance with all regulatory Commission on Cancer Standards relative to Palliative and Supportive Care.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with key stakeholders across UPMC's Health Services Division to promote expansion of palliative and supportive care services.
  • Coordinates the provision of clinical education for various clinical and academic teams to assist with implementation of palliative and supportive care in hospital and ambulatory care settings.
  • Serves as a clinical and programmatic leader and resource for questions and concerns from PSI staff and from other UPMC stakeholders in these settings, for troubleshooting, and for identification of opportunities for improvement.
  • Establishes DOH, TJC, and performance reporting in conjunction with the Clinical Analytics department to ensure ongoing data collection, analysis, and quality improvement activities for hospital-based and ambulatory care palliative care services, including operational/financial impact, patient experience impact, and clinical impact.
  • In partnership with the Medical Director, Palliative and Supportive Institute, leads IDFS program design and implementation, in conjunction with UPMC Health Plan.
  • Assists and supports system initiatives to reduce hospital readmissions, increase goals of care documentation and ICU processes of care for patients with advanced/serious illness.
  • Participates and offers consultation for system and hospital-based workgroups and committees to support implementation of primary palliative care (specifically in inpatient and hospital-outpatient settings) and system goals to reduce unnecessary readmissions and emergency room visits.
  • Collaborates across UPMC to establish hand-off procedures that maximize support and minimize risk for patients and families when transitioning from hospital-based setting to community.
  • Writes, in conjunction with clinical leads, proposals to expand PSI?s clinical or education mission.
  • *Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

  • 5 years of management experience required.
  • Master's degree in healthcare clinical or related field required.
  • Analytical ability necessary to evaluate staff, address and improve clinical and programmatic issues and devise mitigation plans for complex problems.
  • Leadership ability to develop staff, establish and maintain standards of performance within scope of practice.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to effectively create relationships to support the mission and vision of PSI.
  • Clinical experience in palliative care preferred (RN/MSN/MSW).
  • Current state licensure and in good standing if applicable (RN/MSN/MSW).
  • Experience in effective presentation of efforts to multi-professional executive groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. Able to lead groups independently and facilitate change across a large complex organization.
  • Comfortable presenting to Sr. Executives and Board of UPMC.
