UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Director, Clinical Operational Informatics (Northwest)

Description

Purpose:
Oversees the education, planning, development, design, implementation and ongoing evaluation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Serves as a clinical liaison for all portions of the EHR that impact clinical processes. This position will work on internal education, supporting any educational role out, serve as a liaison for collaborative counsel and build on the education curriculum for the hospital. 

Responsibilities:

  • Improve and/or support others in improving the safety, health and well-being of patients by providing an EHR that enables clinicians to improve the quality of patient care by increasing the safety of patients.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues. Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthy relationships. Maintains a conscious balance between work and personal life. Models safe work hours, time management and a healthy lifestyle. Communicates with peers and management any safety hazards identified in the workplace.
  • Recognize symptoms of project problems and react quickly to solve them coordinate the planning, design, development and implementation of the patient care components of the HERCollaborate and communicate with the EHR team, patient care staff and physician leaders to facilitate the successful implementation of the HER. Work closely with the information systems director to identify, select and maintain the electronic equipment needed to utilize the EHR. Oversee the collaboration of various departmental end-users in the design/decision-making processes needed to analyze current operation procedures, identify problems and learn specific input and output requirements of data for future electronic needs. Monitor and evaluate end-user needs. Oversee a wide range of activities associated with the implementation and/or upgrades of new electronic systems for all employees. Oversee the coordination and maintenance downtime policy and procedures for planned and unplanned EHR downtime. Oversee the development of training programs to education end-users on new and/or upgraded applications. Oversee the development and communication of EHR policies and procedures to ensure the effectiveness of new systems applications and software changes as related to patient care
  • Manage complex interactions between applications being implemented and various patient care department processes and workflow. Manage human interactions, politics and organizational issues between multiple departments working on multiple problems simultaneously. Identify management information needs for patient care and facilitate access to the technology and education necessary to meet those needs. Collaborate and communicate with all levels of the organization to facilitate the accomplishment of the corporate UPMC EHR goals while implementing the EHR within the hospital setting. Coordinate and recommend EHR enhancements for all departments within the hospital setting. Serve as a resource and consultant to various clinical disciplines in order to develop a fully integrated, non-redundant EHR.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing for registered nurses
  • BSN required
  • Master's degree in nursing or information systems required.
  • 5 years of related experience (three of which are in a leadership capacity)Advanced project management skills necessary to demonstrate the ability to plan, implement and manage complex projects.
  • Demonstrated strong and effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of various aspects of clinical informatics and EHRs


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional NurseCertification required within 3 years of informatics employment (ANCC Nursing Informatics or CPHIMS
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 34
  • OAPSA
