UPMC is hiring a full-time Data Scientist for the Department of Anesthesiology located in Shadyside. There are remote work options for this role. The Data Scientist works independently using a robust math toolbox to discover solutions for a diverse portfolio of interesting and challenging problems. The Data Scientist develops, implements, and monitors advanced analytic, medical informatics, and predictive modeling tools for health care programs. The scientist normally works Monday through Friday day-light business hours or as needed.

This position is nested in the Center for Innovation in Pain Care in the Department of Anesthesiology.  It involves working across several UPMC units, including UPMC Enterprises and primary care clinics. The unique aspect about this position is that after software development and testing, the development team will form a startup company, funded in part by Enterprises. A successful candidate will be able to continue in the role of data scientist in a start-up company, if desired. Granted funded expires 6/30/23. 

 This is a dynamic opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary small team to develop software using machine learning which predicts in individual patients which treatments are most likely to help them improve their chronic pain.


  • Design, develop, and implement health care analytic and biomedical modeling programs.
  • Creating and improving machine learning algorithms to predict pain treatment outcomes.
  • Working with a software programming team to integrate the algorithms into treatment prediction software used by physicians to treat patients.
  • Optimizing the database structure and queries that pull the relevant patient data into the prediction modeling.
  • Working collaboratively with a diverse technology development team
  • Consults with and provides guidance on the selection and use of modeling software and programs.
  • Responsible for conceiving, planning, designing, developing, and validating robust algorithms for use in analyzing health care models.



  • Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline such as Bioinformatics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Decision Science, Health Services Research, or related field. - Ph.D. highly preferred.
  • Two or more years' experience in quantitative methods or other relevant work
  • Strong mathematics and science background with sound analytical/computational skills and proficiency in pattern recognition and classification. Experience with machine learning models highly desired.
  • Knowledge of statistical and reporting methodologies. Database knowledge for data management is highly desired.
  • Proficiency in statistical programming languages such as, but not limited to: MATLAB, Mathematica, SAS, R, or Statistica
  • Ability to design programs to analyze complicated scenarios.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. A person must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm, and initiative daily. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment necessary. Attention to detail is critical to the success of this position.
