Program Mgr, Poison Center

The Pittsburgh Poison Center serves 2/3 of the state of PA and takes calls from the public and health care providers. This small department consists of a pharmacist director, physician medical director, nurses, and a public health educator. We are looking for a candidate that has some experience in management/leadership, project management, business management, accounting/budgeting, and some IT experience. This position exists to assist the Managing Director in planning, directing, and overall operation of the Pittsburgh Poison Center (PPC). The hired individual is responsible for managing ongoing analysis, development, and implementation of methods and systems to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness of services and functions. The incumbent helps to direct long-range planning, funding, public relations, and educational activities for the area, ensuring the poison center is in compliance with nationally recognized American Association of Poison Control Center (AAPCC) standards.


  • Participate on PPC Leadership Team in developing, reviewing and supporting strategic goals and operational efforts toward funding and accreditation.
  • Assist Managing Director with operational efficiencies, including schedule management, payroll, and other human resource responsibilities.
  • Perform data analysis/analytics as needed for PPC operations. Provide weekly, monthly, and/or yearly reports to business clients, public health agencies, etc., as needed. Ensure PPC data is compliant with National Poison Data System (NPDS) requirements.
  • Manage performance of contracts undertaken by PPC with external business and industry entities. Oversee in-voices and payment schedules in assistance with accounting departments. Serve as PPC liaison to industry clients. Assist in negotiating contractual adjustments in response to external influences. Work with internal legal counsel to ensure contracts are acceptable.
  • Manage all infrastructure software, applications, and equipment (computer, networks, phone systems) to ensure equipment is up to date, regularly maintained, and/or updated on a planned schedule. Manage outsourced IT support contracts and budget to ensure the needs of the PPC are being handled.
  • Aid Managing Director in PPC finance management, including business and industry clients, grants, governmental funding, etc.
  • Participate in the execution of special projects as appropriate, including emergency preparedness, data sales, Mr. Yuk product development, website development, etc.
  • Directly manage PPC educators. Coordinate education efforts in a variety of outlets (i.e. school visits, web-based education, social media, etc). Aid in developing strategic educational partnerships, in conjunction with the Managing Director.
  • Coordinate and document IT and related infrastructure testing on a regular basis to ensure equipment, policies and staff are able to continue to operate in the event of an interruption to service or resources.



  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA preferred
  • Three (3) years of IT experience required
  • One (1) year of experience in a poison center preferred
