UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Director, Health Equity


UPMC Health Plan has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Director, Health Equity to join our leadership team.  As Director of Health Equity, you will be on the cutting edge of a large-scale systemic effort to address legacy issues in health equity and disparity. As Director, you will provide leadership and direct supervision to the Center for Health Equity staff to develop and implement programs designed to eliminate health disparities. You will develop and maintain strong relationships with internal departments within UPMC ISD, partners within other divisions of UPMC, and community-based organizations to optimize ISD activities designed to improve health equity.  You will develop and implement an evaluation plan and provide reports to executives, partners, and regulatory and credentialing agencies that demonstrate the impact of health equity programs and ensure that programs are operating efficiently and meeting program goals.

The ideal candidate will be a thought leader in community development with prior project management and health equity experience.


  • Join forces with UPMC senior leadership to develop and implement clinically and geographically based strategies and initiatives to reduce health disparities.
  • Analyze population health data including utilization, cost, clinical metrics, and other quality measures to inform and evaluate strategies to reduce health disparities and improve health equity.
  • Recommend focused interventions to impact identified trends and develops an evaluation plan to monitor key performance indicators and relevant outcome metrics. Modify interventions to improve efficiency and impact of interventions.
  • Develop innovative engagement strategies for members and innovative partnerships with community-based organizations.
  • Ensure that health equity initiatives are informed by the population they are intended to help and tailored to the unique resources of the communities where they will be implemented.
  • Collaborate with leadership in the Department of Health Economics, Center for High Value Health Care and Quality to design and implement analytical tools and program evaluation metrics to ensure that programs are appropriately measured and that measures are consistent with regulatory and credentialling agency requirements.
  • Partner with Clinical and Network leaders to develop and implement provider-based initiatives designed to improve health equity.
  • Collaborate with Center for High Value Health Care and Center for Social Impact to identify extramural funding sources, research opportunities and to optimize DHS or CMS requirements for community-based spending.
  • In conjunction with Marketing and Communication leaders be able to provide community updates and ensure member and provider materials are culturally competent and compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Work with the ISD Clinical Training and Education team and UPMC Center for Engagement and Inclusion to assist in the development of staff training programs and materials that promote diversity and inclusion and that address health disparities.
  • Develop yearly departmental budgets and collaborate with line of business leaders to optimize the funding associated with health equity initiatives.
  • Inform Health Plan leadership of current trends, issues, problems, and activities, and develop and implement appropriate interventions to facilitate problem resolution and policy making.
  • Create strong rapport with internal and external customers to build and maintain positive relationships supporting business goals and objectives, act as departmental liaison to internal committees and external community groups.
  • Provide data and serve as liaison to the Department of Human Services and the Pennsylvania Insurance Department for strategies, regulations, and clinical outcomes pertaining to health equity as requested.
  • Ensure the attainment of the Health Plan's strategic business goals and objectives by identifying, recruiting, developing, directing, and evaluating personnel within the Center for Health Equity.
  • Effectively communicate with Health Plan and UPMC leadership, community groups and other external contacts on health equity initiatives.
  • Develop and give presentations as needed.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Administration, Hospital Administration, Business, Public Health, or a closely related field. (Master's Degree in one of the disciplines strongly preferred.)
  • 5-7 years of health care experience required.
  • 5-7 years of managed care experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in a community development role.
  • Prior health equity experience.
  • Excellent communication skills; verbal, written, and interpersonal.
  • Above average analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership skills and independent decision-making ability.
  • Computer skills in Word, Excel and Outlook required.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Project management experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34 with renewal
