The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Description

UPMC Eye Center Shadyside offers an environment that is unique from other practices. Situated in an outpatient facility rather than a large hospital setting. Through the Ophthalmic Imager Career Ladder, the selected candidate will have extensive opportunities for career and compensation growth.  Monday - Friday daylight shift depending on patient flow. Travel may be required to other sites.

This highly specialized role will allow you to work alongside some of the field of Ophthalmology’s most respected physicians. As an Ophthalmic Imager, you will be a vital member of the department, using specialized equipment to perform imaging procedures necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye.  The final title will be determined by experience and certifications. 

Responsibilities:

  • Imaging patients on various diagnostic devices, including HVF, OCT, A-scan, Pentacam, Sonomed, Fundus Photos, FA, etc. Learning any new devices obtained by the practice.
  • Saving/uploading images to patient record and Forum along with understanding some of the IT side of imaging. This includes knowing how to submit IT tickets when there is an issue with a device and reaching out to the appropriate staff to resolve along with proper follow through until resolved. Assisting with the maintenance of the imaging devices.
  • Perform other duties to assist the continuous flow of patient care. This may include and is not limited to: sanitizing exam lanes and rooming patients if other technicians are busy; scrubbing schedules and entering any missed imaging appointments on to the imaging schedules; assisting with reschedules of pts; assisting with in-baskets; etc.
  • Perform a variety of highly skilled duties associated with the operation of specialized equipment to assist physicians in documenting, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the eye, including color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, OCT angiography, retinal thickness analysis, slit lamp and gonio photography, visual field testing, external photos, and a-scans.
  • Explain imaging procedures to the tpatients and provide instruction during imaging.
  • Recognize problems or malfunctions of photographic, diagnostic, and related equipment versus patient media opacities. May assist in making minor adjustments and perform preventive maintenance in accordance with established procedures. Advises supervisor of malfunctions or problems affecting the accuracy and quality of scans or images requiring repair by vendor.
  • Participates in the collection of patient history and complete ocular workup such as visual acuity, ocular history, vital signs, intraocular pressure

Qualifications

Ophthalmic Imager I

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years of ophthalmic/optometric experience required.

Ophthalmic Imager II 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of ophthalmic/optometric experience AND ophthalmic imaging/photography certification OR five (5) years ophthalmic experience required. Phlebotomy experience preferred.
