UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

UPMC China International Physician

Description

Purpose:
The international physician is a leader within the hospital to ensure the mission, and vision of UPMC International is realized through (1) high quality, comprehensive clinical care to any and all patients who need care and (2) leadership to ensure the hospital is meeting all quality, experience, operational and financial goals.

Located in Chengdu’s Tianfu New District, the 3A, Chengdu Wanda UPMC International Hospital will be the first in China to be modeled after and managed by a leading U.S. academic medical center. It will provide comprehensive, patient-centered care including six Centers of Excellence (COE). By introducing UPMC's advanced operations, clinical technology, and medical service system, the hospital will offer world-class, international care to patients without the need to travel far from home. The medical staff will be comprised of internationally trained physicians, as well as a Chinese expert team, providing specialized,  one-stop services for patients.

This 500-bed hospital will provide comprehensive primary care and family medicine services from neonate to geriatric, including a spacious, dedicated Health Check Up Center for preventative screening, health coaching, and lifestyle/wellness management. The hospital will also provide access to UPMC international expert clinicians, providing high acuity, innovative, and comprehensive medical and surgical services for the Heart and Vascular Institute, Oncology, Neuroscience, GI, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, and Women’s Health. Chengdu Wanda UPMC International Hospital will create the new standard of patient-centered care, access, and clinical excellence as well as a world-class, innovative, training center for cutting-edge training for clinicians and administrators.
 

Responsibilities:

  • The mix of clinical and leadership work will be developed with the hospital leadership and the physician in a collaborative and individual basis. The entire scope of work will not exceed one full time equivalent (FTE). The mix will be more heavily weighted toward leadership, including both the clinical department as well as overall leadership of the hospital.
  • The International Physician Leader and Clinician fits into the organization in several key and unique ways, providing value broadly to the organization and the patients it serves. The physician is an integral member of the clinical department of their specialty. In this departmental role, they will serve to provide clinical services as expected from a senior physician of the department. The physician will also work as a liaison with the clinical teams in Pittsburgh, PA (U.S.) and other UPMC international sites. In addition, the physician leader will function as the co-chair to their departments and will assist the Chair in department leadership and development, including, but not limited to clinical pathways and care initiatives, quality and patient experience initiatives, education, marketing, liaising with local physicians and academic organizations, etc.  Additionally, the physician leader will be asked to serve in a specific leadership role within the hospital. This will be consistent with a senior leadership role and have a set time commitment, duties, reporting structure and set of goals developed with hospital leadership. This work may also require liaising with teams in Pittsburgh and across UPMC International.
  • The Team reporting to the international physician leader will be dependent on the specific clinical and leadership roles identified.
  • CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:  Examines, diagnoses, treats and/or refers patients. Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.  Follows established policies, procedures, and objectives; continuous quality improvements objectives and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.  Maintains a health record for each patient seen in accordance with Health Information Management policies and procedures.  Provides excellent internal/external customer service via telephone, electronic, or face-to-face contact to assist patients with their health care needs.  Refers clients for appropriate specialty care services, lab and x-ray, and any other ancillary services that are appropriate for patient's management and care.
  • The portion of the physician's work in the leadership category will generally be divided into two categories and the time split between each will be determined through collaborative design between the physician, the department chair and hospital leadership.  Clinical Department Leadership: this role will generally support the department(s) chair by acting as the co-chair. The physician will work collaboratively with the chair, department and hospital leadership to ensure the department is meeting all clinical, operational, and financial goals.  Hospital Leadership: this role will support the hospital in areas which require clinical leadership to meet the quality, operational, experience and financial goals. This will require work with and across various departments, both clinical and non-clinical, to develop and lead programs vital to the hospital mission. This could include, but is not limited to, programs for patient experience, clinical marketing, Quality and Safety programs, education and academics, etc.

 

Qualifications

PhD and/or MD Board certification/eligibility in applicable field of Medicine

Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English is required

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) OR Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) OR Doctor of Podiatric Medicine
