The Associate Counsel provides effective legal counsel to assist in meeting the legal needs of UPMC, a large, diverse, health care delivery and finance system.  This position has a heavy emphasis on employment law.  The ideal candidate is an experienced attorney, preferably with significant experience in health law and/or employment law.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide counsel to managers and staff throughout UPMC and address and resolve legal issues as they arise on a daily basis, such as in the areas of regulatory and patient care law. 
  • Under general supervision and guidance of more senior UPMC attorneys, responsible for one or more of the following: Providing legal counsel and legal services to UPMC corporate and business units in moderately complex business arrangements; Representing UPMC business units in legal proceeding of moderate complexity or significance (hearings and appellate proceedings before arbitrators, administrative agencies, orphans court and magistrates): Monitoring outside counsel with respect to moderately complex business arrangements or litigation.
  • Provide guidance with respect to contractual arrangements and prepare contractual and other legal documentation.
  • Review and recommend changes to corporate policy to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
  • Apply general legal knowledge in the following areas, among others: federal and state health care laws and regulations (e.g. Medicare, Medicaid, licensure, accreditation, malpractice liability, medical staff, patient care law, behavioral health, guardianships, etc.), corporate law, taxation, real estate, labor and employment, antitrust, insurance, commercial and finance; and apply specialized legal knowledge in one or more of such areas.
  • Assist senior UPMC attorneys and/or outside counsel in either highly complex litigation or highly complex business transactions.
  • Perform special project assignments for the Executive Vice President UPMC & Chief Legal Officer

 

Qualifications

  • J.D. Degree required.
  • Minimum four (4) years experience as a practicing attorney, including significant experience in health law or another relevant specialty, such as employment law or litigation.
  • Pennsylvania license or obtain such license within six (6) months of date-of-hire required.
