UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

To manage and coordinate the delivery and quality of: Pulmonary Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Physiology Lab and Sleep Medicine Laboratory Services. Fiscal responsibility for Respiratory Car, Pulmonary Physiology Lab, Sleep Disorders Center and regional sleep franchise. Maintain and further develop regional sleep medicine franchise.



  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards and agencies having applicable guidelines in areas of responsibility including development, ongoing monitoring and consistent reporting of a departmental QA/QI program in accordance with established HMC objectives.
  • Maintains accreditation with PA Dept of Health, the Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists (CAP), and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
  • Demonstrates Hamot's commitment to Service Excellence by understanding the needs of patients, their families, physicians and co-workers and doing what is required the first time, every time by being responsible, sensitive, accurate, timely, coordinated and thorough
  • Projects and recommends strategic and operational budgetary needs for Respiratory Care, Pulmonary Lab, Sleep Lab, and regional sleep lab franchise in concert with Sr. Vice President. Participates with Sr. Vice President, Medical Director and other Heart Institute Administration in the planning, organization, development and implementation of goals and objectives, new programs, procedures and services.
  • Carries out day to day supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Establish clear performance expectations by reviewing and maintaining updated job descriptions and requirements for staff and shift coordinators.
  • Manages the lung screening program.
  • Provides a clear and open communication process to staff, peers, and management that enhances inter-and intra-departmental communications. Conducts and/or actively participates in all departmental/Medical Center meetings and committees as required or needed to ensure the delivery of the highest quality of care in a coordinated manner.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with regional management counterparts in respiratory care, pulmonary physiology and sleep medicine.
  • Provides and/or ensures 24 hour, seven day a week on call coverage for Respiratory Care, Pulmonary Lab Sleep Lab, and regional sleep lab franchise.
  • Ensures the successful orientation, continuing competency and specialized/technical training of personnel in the proper use of current and new technology. Provides guidance and direction in any issue of policy, procedure and safety.
  • Manages the performance of provided services with contracted institutions outside of HMC. In concert with Sr. Vice President develops marketing and recruitment strategies to meet the short and long term goals and objectives of Respiratory Care, the Pulmonary Physiology Lab, the Sleep Lab, and the regional sleep franchise.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field in such a manner as to be a resource for the implementation and delivery of pulmonary and sleep services. Includes the timely provision of annual performance reviews, ongoing mentoring and development of staff and shift coordinators.
  • Identifies the need for revision to and or the development of policies and or procedures. Provides interpretation as needed to insure compliance.
  • Promotes all services by marketing services to physician's offices and other providers. Participates in health fairs to promote services.
  • Possesses the ability to obtain and interpret information considering age specific needs. Performs the duties of , the respiratory care shift coordinator, and lead sleep technologist as needed.
  • Maintains fiscal responsibility in Respiratory Care, Pulmonary Physiology, Sleep Disorders Center and regional sleep lab franchise.



Graduate of a Co ARC (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) approved Respiratory program requiredAMA-approved BS degree in Respiratory Therapy or BS in related or relevant field of study 5 years of clinical respiratory care experience including experience in a management/leadership role requiredRespiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation required Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required Respiratory therapists who receive their RRT credential from the NBRC after July 1, 2002 are required to maintain certification under the NBRC guidelines

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Osteopathic Respiratory Care OR Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP)
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
