Description

Serves as the Manager of Neurodiagnostics for UPMC Neurological Institute.  Reports to the Neuroscience Director.  Supervises day-to-day operations including personnel in both inpatient and outpatient neurodiagnostics for EEG/EMG/EMU.  Assumes 24-hour responsibility for achieving quality patient care services through leadership and utilization of resources.

Performs, under general direction and according to established guidelines and procedures, routine and complex procedures to obtain data for use in the clinical diagnosis of disorders of the nervous system in at least one of the following modalities of Neurodiagnostics: Electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Epilepsy Monitoring and Polysomnography (PSG), or Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS). Performs duties in various diagnostic and research areas as assigned. Manages the daily operations of the department. Trains and mentors new staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Establishes appropriate and effective communication strategies with other disciplines, providers and peers.  Ensures professional and respectful interpersonal relationships. Develops collegial relationships with staff and functions as a resource for clinical expertise relating to Electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Epilepsy Monitoring, Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), and other diagnostic tools implemented at all sites. Directs clinical practice activities that produce results in measurable outcomes. Recommends changes in clinical practice or process improvement based upon clinical findings, multidisciplinary team recommendations, and research to promote cost/quality outcomes.
  • Collaborates with Medical Director(s) to ensure quality patient care and along with programmatic growth. Responds to emergent situations and indicates appropriate actions. Safeguards that the department meets and complies with JCAHO standards and regulations, as well as the standards and regulations for all other regulatory agencies. Knows policies and procedures, and displays knowledge of infection control and universal precautions.
  • Serves as an educator and mentor to staff.  Creates an onboarding plan for on-the-job-training and fosters continuing education opportunities for seasoned staff.  Takes action to improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental needs. Requests assistance and review relevant policies and procedures prior to performing new or challenging skills. Promotes an environment conducive to professional growth and development; to be equally inclusive of those in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Manager controls the financial performance and productivity of the department within defined fiscal parameters. Prepares staffing needs, along with operating and capital budgets based upon analysis of clinical goals and established standards. Prepares monthly statistics for the department. Completes Quality Assurance protocols as directed by the director. Ensures that all billing is completed, accurate, and in a timely fashion. Reviews and approves the supply orders for all departments.
  • Prepares a deliverable personnel schedule that demonstrates ability to manage resources to meet volume. Demonstrates the ability to apply a varied leadership style based upon situation and developmental stage of individual or group. Demonstrates consistent adherence to established guidelines for employee performance and standards. Interviews and selects new employees. Completes payroll requirements and performance appraisals.  Applies corrective action when necessary.
  • Technical skills include first-hand knowledge of equipment and its applications. Trouble shoots all equipment failures and works with internal and external departments to resolve. Ensures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department, i.e., Maintenance, Biomedical Engineering, or outside vendor.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.  Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of experience as a technologist performing Electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Epilepsy Monitoring and Polysomnography (PSG), or Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS).  One-year supervisory experience required.

American Board of Registered Electro Neurodiagnostic Technologists OR Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist (CNCT) OR Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist (R.NCS.T.)

Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
