UPMC Hamot School of Nursing is seeking a Manager of Student Success and Engagement to join their growing team!

The UPMC Schools of Nursing Manager, Student Success and Engagement is a leader with management and high-level support responsibilities across all campuses. The Manager serves as a role model for faculty and students and partners with executive leadership in the achievement of a culture of excellence within the pre-licensure, hospital based educational environment. The Manager will coordinate a holistic student support program encompassing student experience from pre-enrollment through graduation.



  • Develops, implements, and evaluates successful models of student support at the UPMC Schools of Nursing.
    • The Manager will:
      • Collaborate with executive leadership to design academic support models based on current evidenced based practices that promote student retention and success. Includes test-taking strategies, study skills, critical thinking, clinical decision making, processes for planning/time management, and general test anxiety strategies.
      • Enhance faculty development to provide consistent academic support services.
      • Provide workshops for students and facultyTrend and report data for all students referred for student support.
  • Provides academic support to students/coordinates academic support services with designated faculty.
    • The Manager will:
      • Meet with at risk students to identify needs for improvement and success.
      • Refer students to course faculty for further assistance with concept learning.
      • Assists with the coordination of program evaluation, and student support services. This requires a focus on increasing student retention by developing and implementing programs and processes to continually improve retention, developing student onboarding procedures, and developing the student support program to meet evolving student needs.
  • Provides non-academic support and partners with Life Solutions to create successful models to support the non-academic needs of students.
  • Creates strategies for pre-enrollment students,learning assessment needs, and activities.
  • Plan pre-admission/orientation activities.
  • Use learning assessment tool to evaluate learning needs of students entering the nursing program and identify at-risk students prior to admission.
  • Creates strategies to engage students re-entering the nursing program following a break in enrollment to ensure academic and non-academic success.
  • Design processes for engagement of students during idle time.
  • Coordinate readmission with course faculty based on needs of students.
  • Serves as advisor for students re-entering the program following a break in enrollment.
  • Coordinates readmission meetings for students with Director, Financial Aid, and course faculty.
  • Creates methods for insuring compliance with all pre-admission regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Accountable for review, revision, and development of student policies.
  • Accountable for annual review and publication of the Student Handbook.
  • Acts as SNAP advisor/provides support to SNAP chaptersServes as member/advisor to Student Support Services Committee.
  • Provides monthly updates to executive leadership committee.
  • Meets with each UPMC SON Director monthly to discuss school specific issues.
  • Coordinates monthly UPMC SON meetings with faculty members who provide academic support, coaching and/or tutoring.
  • Weekly travel between the UPMC SON campuses to provide an on-site presence is required.
  • Serves as a change agent in the parent institution as well as across the Schools of Nursing in enhancing the visibility of nursing.
  • Evaluates teaching-learning effectiveness and create strategies for change in nursing education.
  • Identifies, educates and supports the learning needs of faculty during change process.
  • Assumes formal leadership responsibilities for one or more of the following cross campus committees: Systematic Program Evaluation and Measurement, Student Support, Faculty Senate and/or Faculty Development and Research.
  • Demonstrates a high level of initiative and ability to work independently in an active leadership role within UPMC Schools of Nursing and individual campuses.
  • Creates a learning environment that focuses on student socialization to the role of the nurse and facilitates learner's self reflection.
  • Assists faculty in developing the ability to engage in thoughtful and constructive self and peer evaluation.
  • Implements curriculum revisions based on sound educational principles, nursing theory and evidenced based research across the campuses.
  • Creates appropriate resources for the diverse student learner and assists faculty in developing relevant resources.
  • Insures that available resources are utilized efficiently and equitably across all schools of nursing.
  • Establishes and maintains positive, caring relationships with management, faculty, and students as well as patients/families and all other members of the health care team.
  • Assists in development of faculty to serve as academic success ad engagement coaches.
  • Demonstrates sound decision making in addition to critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of the teaching-learning process and evaluation of faculty and student performance.
  • Works productively and effectively within a complex educational environment, supervising faculty, handling multiple students and creating meaningful learning opportunities.
  • Assumes an active leadership role in a professional nursing organization.
  • Demonstrates commitment in the development of faculty through mentoring, education and knowledge sharing.
  • Acts as a role model for continuous learning through formal and informal education.
  • Collaborates with faculty to identify budgetary needs and provide input to Director, Executive Director and Associate Executive Director, Business Operations.
  • Disseminates best practice in nursing education through contributions to UPMC newsletters, presentations at annual best practice conference or at regional conferences.
  • Exhibits a spirit of inquiry about teaching-learning, student development, evaluation methodology or other aspects of the role of the educator by completing an annual scholarly project promoting innovative best practices in academic counseling and coaching.
  • Aggregates data to reflect the outcomes of the teaching learning process within the school and across all campuses.
  • Analyzes student, faculty, and employer satisfaction outcome data in co-creating a strategic action plan that continuously improves the educational process. Facilitates multi-campus processes, committees and quality initiatives to assure appropriate credentialing.
  • Incorporates the goals of the nursing program and the parent institution when proposing change or managing ideas.
  • Develops networks, collaborations and partnership to enhance nursing's influence within the organization and the community.
  • Integrates the values of trust, respect, collegiality, professionalism and caring to build an organizational climate that fosters development of the student and the teacher.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships within each individual school and across the schools by building teams through the use of positive communication and motivational techniques.
  • Resolves and manages conflict effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Coaches faculty and students on cultural diversity and civility in the educational environment.
  • Creates an environment which recognizes and values differences in students, peers, patients, families and communities.



  • Master Degree in Nursing or Nursing Education required.
  • Five years of nursing practice.
  • Five years teaching experience required.
  • Experience in academic support or academic counseling required.
  • Must possess outstanding communication skills necessary to provide leadership across all educational campuses.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the state where the facility is located is preferred.
  • CPR certification required. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • UPMC approved certification required in lieu of PhD or DNP enrollment in Academic Certification in Nurse Education.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
